Cristopher Sanchez is among rare company.
The Philadelphia Phillies left-handed starter pitched seven scoreless innings in a 3-0 win over the San Diego Padres on May 27 to surpass Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander for the longest scoreless streak in franchise history.
Alexander pitched 41 straight scoreless innings in 1911. It was the franchise's longest scoreless streak since at least 1893 when the pitching mound was set to its current distance.
Sanchez's streak is now 44⅔ innings. It is the seventh-longest in Major League Baseball since 1920.
Orel Hershiser holds the MLB record with 59 consecutive scoreless innings pitched in 1988 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Hershiser and Sanchez are the only true starting pitchers to go an entire month without allowing a run (minimum four starts), per MLB.com's Paul Casella. Hershiser was scoreless in September 1988.
In five starts in May, Sanchez covered 39 innings, struck out 45 batters, walked three and allowed no runs.
Sanchez's scoreless innings streak dates back to the second inning of his April 30 start against the San Francisco Giants. It is the longest since Zack Greinke compiled 45⅔ consecutive scoreless innings with the Dodgers in 2015.
Sanchez's ERA fell to 1.47. It is the best for a starter in the sport.
Sanchez ranks second in MLB in strikeouts with 95, trailing only the Milwaukee Brewers' Jacob Misiorowski (100). He is tied second in Baseball Reference's wins above replacement metric at 3.7 with the Dodgers' Andy Pages. Shohei Ohtani is the leader with 3.9.
