The road to a varsity wrestling championship wasn't an easy one for freshman Jace Weinerman, but he achieved it on Jan. 17.

The third-seeded Weinerman scored four takedowns in a 16-3 major decision win over top-seeded Andrew Bergman of Commack to win the 132-pound title at the 60th Murphy-Guccione Shoreline Classic at New Rochelle High School.

"It feels great, honestly," said Weinerman, a Westlake High School student, representing the combined Briarcliff/Byram Hills/Valhalla/Westlake team. "I worked too hard in the offseason to not place. To me, it means the world. I implemented all of my techniques I learned in the offseason."

Weinerman's eighth-grade season on varsity in 2024-25 was cut short due to a concussion, but he's back and thriving in his freshman season.

BBHVW won four individual titles and won the team title with 203 points. Top seeds Marcarlo Mannello (103 pounds), Vincenzo Mannello (118) and Nick Fortugno (126) won their weight classes. Both Mannello brothers have won Section 1 titles and placed at Eastern States and states. Marcarlo Mannello won the Eastern States title last week. Fortugno is a three-time Section 1 champion.

It's a good learning experience to be in that triangle of wrestling knowledge. Not to mention that BBHVW champion Joe Grippi was an all-state wrestler, who won two Section 1 titles at Fox Lane.

"It's great," Weinerman said of being in the BBHVW wrestling room. "We all help each other and we're always training and getting better."

Weinerman also noted that he's the Mannello family's next door neighbor.

"He's had a great year so far," Grippi said. "He had a solid year last year, but was cut short by injury. He has a very bright future."

Iona Prep had a trio of champions as Shane Degl (138), Ralphie Rodriguez (175) and Lorenzo Gunzer (190) prevailed in finals. Gunzer, the No. 6 seed, pinned top-seeded Maximus Dyckman of Island Trees in 2:34.

"Shane, Ralph and Lorenzo all wrestled well today," Iona Prep coach Tom Straehle said. "It was nice to see Lorenzo finally break through."

Fox Lane's Luke Ryan won the 165-pound title, topping Rye's Jason Gaylord by technical fall, 20-4. Rye's Jack Anderson won the 215-pound title, pinning Fox Lane's Andrew Brauning in 5:15.
