Training camp for the Indianapolis Colts kicks off in about a month, so as part of our preview of what's to come, we will be evaluating each positional battle that is expected to unfold.

What took place during offseason programs laid the foundation for each of these competitions and provided us with some insights into where things may stand. That said, how training camp and the preseason unfold will ultimately determine who wins these roles.

Next up is the tight end position.

What Colts' training camp battle is taking place at tight end

Admittedly, there may not be much of a competition unfolding here. What we know is that Tyler Warren, Mo Alie-Cox, and Drew Ogletree will occupy three spots on the 53-man roster. The question is whether or not the Colts will roster a fourth and if that player will be Will Mallory.

Where do things stand following offseason programs?

In terms of where things stand at the back end of the tight end depth chart, there isn't much that we can glean from offseason programs.

Along with Mallory, on the roster at tight end are Carson Towt and Sean McKeon. Towt played college basketball last season and is transitioning to football. McKeon was on the practice squad last year and has primarily filled a blocking-first role in the NFL.

Predicting the winner of this competition

There are three possible outcomes here. The most likely is that Mallory again makes the team. It's common for teams to roster four tight ends, and with Alie-Cox and Ogletree already on the team, Mallory's ability in the passing game can provide a different element.

The second possibility is that the Colts only keep three tight ends for roster math purposes, allowing them to go heavy at another position. There were games last year where the Colts had only three tight ends available, with Mallory inactive.

The third option is that McKeon or Towt beat out Mallory. Towt is navigating a big learning curve, and when it comes to McKeon making a roster push, as mentioned, the Colts already have two blocking-heavy players on the roster. McKeon's path to the 53 would likely consist of him really standing out on special teams.
