Training camp for the Jacksonville Jaguars kicks off in about a month, so as part of our preview of what's to come, we will be evaluating each positional battle that is expected to unfold.
What took place during offseason programs laid the foundation for each of these competitions and provided us with some insights into where things may stand. That said, what takes place during training camp and the preseason will ultimately determine who wins these roles.
Up next is the tight end position
Typically, teams will roster four tight ends on the 53-man. We know that Brenton Strange, Nate Boerkircher, and Tanner Koziol will occupy three of those spots, which leaves Quintin Morris and Hunter Long potentially battling it out for that final position on the depth chart.
The biggest thing we learned at the tight end position is that even with Strange and Boerkircher, we cannot forget about Koziol. He was among the standout performers and brings an added pass-catching element to the position.
His play this spring all but cemented the idea that one of Morris and Long will potentially be on the outside looking in.
This decision for the Jaguars comes down to what skill set they'd rather have on the roster. Morris is a blocking-first tight end, while Long is more of a pass catcher. In this offense under Liam Coen, I don't believe there is such a thing as having too many good blocking options, so my early prediction is that Morris earns that final roster spot. With Koziol, Long's impact is diminished.
