North Carolina will open the College World Series against Ole Miss on Friday at 7 p.m. ET at Charles Schwab Field, beginning what the Tar Heels hope is a long stay in Omaha.
UNC will face the Rebels in the second game of the day, following the tournament opener between Troy and No. 16 national seed West Virginia at 2 p.m. Those matchups comprise the first two games of this year’s College World Series.
The Tar Heels, the highest-ranked team on their side of the bracket, are making their 13th appearance in Omaha. They swept the Chapel Hill Regional, beating VCU in the opener and ECU twice. North Carolina then survived a grueling Chapel Hill Super Regional against USC, winning the series in three games and clinching its CWS berth on a walk-off double by Owen Hull.
Ole Miss is making its seventh College World Series appearance and is chasing a second national championship after winning its first in 2022. The Rebels are undefeated so far this postseason. They swept the Lincoln Regional, defeating No. 13 national seed Nebraska and Arizona State twice, then rolled through the Auburn Super Regional with a sweep of the Tigers.
Joining UNC and Ole Miss in their half of the bracket are Cinderella Troy and West Virginia, the No. 16 national seed. Troy swept Little Rock and outscored the Trojans 19-4 in the regional round, while West Virginia dominated Cal Poly in a sweep, outscoring the Mustangs 29-3.
The other half of the bracket features three national seeds from the same conference: No. 3 Georgia, No. 6 Texas and No. 7 Alabama, along with Oklahoma. That cluster of league rivals makes the opposite side of the draw one of the most demanding in recent years, with familiarity likely to produce tight, low-margin games.
All four teams on that side swept their super regionals. Oklahoma beat Kansas, Alabama dispatched St. John’s, Texas eliminated Oregon and Georgia took down Mississippi State. Alabama and Oklahoma will meet first on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET, followed by Georgia vs. Texas at 7 p.m. ET.
With UNC entering as the top-ranked team in its bracket and riding postseason momentum, Friday’s matchup with Ole Miss will offer an early indication of whether the Tar Heels can navigate a crowded field and contend for the program’s first national title.
