On Wednesday, 'The Ringer' ranked Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum as the No. 13 player in the NBA.
Speaking on Wednesday afternoon's edition of 'The Herd,' FOX Sports radio host Colin Cowherd said he had no problem with Tatum's ranking, citing several reasons why he thinks that Tatum is not the player that some people think that he is.
Cowherd called Tatum "really talented," but said "there are times he doesn't lead, he doesn't initiate, and way too often he doesn't close.'
For reference, we tend to agree with the Celtics, in general, being a team that doesn't always close well. The other day, we wrote that the "killer instinct" is something that the Celtics can learn from the world champion New York Knicks. For as good as the Celtics have been over the last decade, they haven't always had that killer instinct.
Isaiah Thomas-led Celtics had it, but they didn't have the talent to win the title. The 2023-24 team had it - and won the title - but some of that was as a result of Jrue Holiday's leadership ability.
We aren't necessarily defending Cowherd's defense of the low ranking, but it is fair to point out that the organization in general has been too three-point happy for a while and too apt to settle in key situations. That settling and lack of physical play contributed to Boston's collapse against The 76ers in this year's first round, where the Celtics were upset in seven games.
Another reason for Cowherd's take on Tatum? He thinks the team was too good without him this season. Cowherd cited examples that when guys like Steph Curry and Tyrese Haliburton get hurt, the team struggles, but Tatum's Celtics were just fine without him.
It's hard to argue with Cowherd's point, but Cowherd has also often said that the regular season is easier to succeed in. So perhaps he shouldn't put as much stock in the team's regular season record as he is for the sake of this argument.
Jaylen Brown was ranked as the No. 14 player in the league, per the Ringer.
The Celtics have the No. 27 and No. 40 picks in next week's NBA Draft, but according to reports, they are looking to move up. It's unclear why the Celtics are looking to move up, but it could be for any number of reasons that we covered here.
