Tennessee boasts several high schools that have achieved athletic success while also producing individuals who go on to reach exceeding heights.
Of course, several such schools reside in the Memphis area.
Niche recently conducted a study which ranked Tennessee's top 25 high schools for athletes, using parent and student "reviews of athletics, number of state championships, student participation and the number of sports offered at the school" as well as data from the U.S. Department of Education.
The Commercial Appeal ranked its area high schools from the order in which each appears in Tennessee's top 25 ranking. Each school's state ranking is included.
State ranking: No. 2
Total number of sports: 16
During the 2025-26 school year, the Purple Wave had team state championship berths in bowling, cross-country, football (playoffs) golf, lacrosse, soccer, track and field and wrestling, winning a team championship in bowling and an individual title in wrestling.

State ranking: No. 5
Total number of sports: 27
The Saints had team state tournament appearances in boys basketball, boys and girls cross-country, football (playoffs), boys and girls golf, boys and girls lacrosse, boys soccer, volleyball and wrestling. BCS won state championships in boys basketball and volleyball and had two individual champions in track and field. The boys soccer team also finished as state runner-up.
State ranking: No. 8
Total number of sports: 14
The Owls had team state tournament appearances in bowling, cross-country, football (playoffs), golf, lacrosse, tennis and wrestling, and had one individual golf champion.
State ranking: No. 9
Total number of sports: No. 12
The Sting had team state tournament appearances in cross-country, lacrosse, tennis and girls basketball.
State ranking: No. 11
Total number of sports: 16
The Lynx had team state tournament berths in girls cross-country, football (playoffs), girls lacrosse and boys and girls tennis. Both of Lausanne's tennis teams won state titles.
State ranking: No. 17
Total number of sports: 18
The Tigers' boys basketball team reached the state tournament, while the football team reached the playoffs. Whitehaven had an individual champion in boys track and field.
State ranking: No. 21
Total number of sports: 22
The Dragons had team state tournament appearances in baseball, girls basketball, boys and girls cross-country, football (playoffs), boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls tennis, girls track and field and boys and girls wrestling. Both tennis teams finished as runners-up at state, while girls track and field won a team state championship and six individual titles.
State ranking: No. 23
Total number of sports: 21
The Mustangs had team state tourney berths in baseball, boys and girls cross-country, football (playoffs), boys and girls golf, boys and girls lacrosse, boys and girls soccer and boys wrestling. Houston's baseball team finished state runner-up, and the school had individual champions in boys track and boys wrestling.

1. Christian Brothers High School
State ranking: No. 2
Total number of sports: 16

State ranking: No. 8
Total number of sports: 14

5. Lausanne Collegiate School
State ranking: No. 11
Total number of sports: 16
The Lynx had team state tournament berths in girls cross-country, football (playoffs), girls lacrosse and boys and girls tennis. Both of Lausanne's tennis teams won state titles.
6. Whitehaven
State ranking: No. 17
Total number of sports: 18
The Tigers' boys basketball team reached the state tournament, while the football team reached the playoffs. Whitehaven had an individual champion in boys track and field.
7. Collierville
State ranking: No. 21
Total number of sports: 22
