Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker spoke with reporters recently after practice at Missouri Western State University. He discussed his mindset regarding long-distance kicks and his plans to improve ahead of the 2026 season.
"I feel like the only time I've hit a field goal longer than 58 yards was the end of a half or end of a game. So even when the wind's at my back, it's like, all right, we get the ball to the 40-yard line to 58 yards," said Butker. "That's what I'm expected to make. The other stuff is very rare. I need to be able to dial that up, but the majority of my kicks need to be 58 yards. And even I think I was looking up. If you took out the field goals from under 30 yards, which are kind of chip shots, everybody pretty much makes those."
Through the season's first five games, Butker surprisingly went 10-for-13 on field goals and 11-for-13 on extra points. The missed field goals were from 40, 56, and 58 yards, which he's converted often in past years.
"If you take those field goals out, the average field goal distance is like 45 yards," said Butker, "So I'm really trying to focus in on that number. Let me hit 40- to 50-yard field goals consistently, and if you're doing that, then a 53-yarder, a 37-yarder, still kind of within that range, and you're kind of mentally used to that physically."
During the 2025 season, Butker converted 31 of 35 extra-point attempts and 33 of 38 field-goal attempts.
