Kansas City Chiefs running back Emari Demercado spoke with reporters after practice on Wednesday at Missouri Western State University. He discussed his strength in pass protection and getting to know Patrick Mahomes during training camp.
"I take a lot of pride (in pass protection). I think that's just where I found my niche in the league," said Demercado. "So to stay on top of that, you know, be able to protect somebody like Pat (Patrick Mahomes), that's a big deal. So I take a lot of pride in that."
Demercado entered the league in 2023 after going undrafted and starring in college at TCU. He played for five years for the Horned Frogs, tallying 1,615 rushing yards, 10 rushing touchdowns, and 40 receptions for 277 yards and a touchdown. He revealed his early interactions with Mahomes at practice.
"I feel like you're such a star in the league. You know everything about it. But it was just that when I first got here, it was surreal. Like this is really my teammate now," said Demercado. "But he's a great dude. If you mess up, he's right there to tell you how to do it right. So he's just a great dude."
The 27-year-old was Arizona's third-string running back for most of his tenure behind James Conner and Trey Benson. In 13 games played last season, Demercado finished with 312 rushing yards on 44 carries and 101 yards receiving on 13 catches for a touchdown.
