Chad Tracy Reveals Exciting New Plan For Marcelo Mayer originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Now in his second season with the Boston Red Sox, Marcelo Mayer is still trying to find his role and establish himself as an everyday player.
Alex Cora didn't make that easy for the former first-round draft pick, frequently holding him out of the lineup and benching him against left-handed pitchers, slowing his development. Of Mayer's 183 career plate appearances entering play on Tuesday, only 33 have come against southpaws.
Fortunately, interim manager Chad Tracy plans to change that.
Prior to Monday's 5-0 win over the Toronto Blue Jays, Tracy said he wants to get Mayer more at-bats against lefties and use him as the team's second baseman.
Marcelo Mayer has not started a single game this season against a left-handed starter. Could that change with Alex Cora gone and Chad Tracy now in charge as Red Sox interim manager?

"I think for right now (Trevor Story) is our shortstop, and I think for right now, if he’s off, we’ll probably see (Andruw Monasterio) there. I’m going to let Marcelo settle in at second base for the time being," Tracy said via MassLive's Christopher Smith.
Mayer responded with two hits, a run, an RBI and a walk on Monday, helping lead the Red Sox to their third straight win. Mayer has played well for Tracy so far, going 3-for-7 with two RBI, a run, a walk and a stolen base in the latter's first two games at the helm.
After the game, the 23-year-old infielder had a positive response to Tracy's new plan for him.
"I appreciate it. Obviously, I want to be out there every single day playing, trying to help the team win," Mayer said during his postgame interview with NESN. "I trust whatever decision he wants to make for the team. At the end of the day, I just want to be winning."
Mayer played for Tracy at Triple-A Worcester and called him one of his favorite baseball managers he's ever had, so it sounds like they have a good relationship and are already on the same page.
