Red Sox Place Another Starter On Injured List, 23-Year-Old Marcelo Mayer originally appeared on NESN. Add NESN as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
Boston Red Sox shortstop Marcelo Mayer was in the news cycle all day on Friday.
Overnight, a report developed that supposedly came from sources inside Boston's building that claimed the organization was frustrated with Mayer for "not playing through" small injuries.
Hours later, interim manager Chad Tracy revealed that Mayer had, in fact, been playing through a "small injury" for quite some time.
Mayer's insistence to play through the injury has now landed him on the 10-day injured list.
Mayer's official injury designation is a "bone stress reaction to the left ulna," more commonly known as a stress fracture in his left arm.
Tracy informed reporters of the injury before Friday night's game against the New York Yankees.
"We’ve known off and on, just some things going on for a little bit," Tracy said. "But there’s times where if he’s using more volume in the cage, maybe it’s there. Then there’s other times where it wasn’t so bad. ... From our standpoint, as you look at the scan, it’s like, ‘All right, if we keep going, we can make it worse.’"
Triple-A callup Tsung-che Cheng will be making his Red Sox debut, starting at shortstop and batting in the nine hole in Mayer's absence.
