The Boston Red Sox shocked fans on Friday morning when they placed 23-year-old shortstop Marcelo Mayer on the 10-day injured list.
Mayer had reportedly been battling left arm soreness for months, but had not made it known to reporters.
His injury came as a shock, and he landed in the already packed training room with Trevor Story, Nick Sogard and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
At the time of the injury, no timetable was made available for a potential return. Interim manager Chad Tracy and Mayer told reporters the prescription would be rest, but independent doctor Jesse Morse believes the injury could be a little bit worse than let on.
"Diagnosed with a stress reaction in his ulna (forearm). Very strange injury…," Morse wrote. "I’d have him use a PEMF for 30-60 minutes daily and use a hyperbaric chamber daily. I expect him to easily miss a month."
Tsung-Che Cheng has stepped up as the everyday starting shortstop in Mayer's absence. He recorded a double in his Red Sox debut, but has been held hitless since.
