The NFI list in the NFL, or Non-Football Injury/Illness list, is used for players who are injured or become ill outside of football activities. It's distinct from the Injured Reserve (IR) list and the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list for injuries sustained during NFL activities.

Here's a more detailed explanation:
  • What it is:
The NFI list is for players who suffer injuries or illnesses not related to football practices or games. This could include injuries from personal training, recreational activities, or even injuries sustained during a car accident.

  • Roster Impact:
A player on the NFI list counts against the active roster initially, but if they are not ready for the regular season, they can be placed on the reserve/NFI list and sit out the first four games of the season.

  • Examples:
Players might be placed on the NFI list due to a college injury before their NFL rookie season, an injury from a car accident, or a long-term illness not related to football.

  • Similarities to PUP:
Both the NFI and PUP lists are used to manage players who cannot participate in early-season practices or games due to injury or illness, but the NFI list is specifically for non-football related issues.

  • Key Differences:
A player on the active/NFI list can participate in practices and games during the preseason, while a player on the PUP list cannot. Additionally, the NFI list is used for injuries or illnesses sustained outside of NFL activities, while the PUP list is for injuries sustained during NFL activities.

Well, that solves a bit of a logjam issue and opens things up for competition. Have to assume the starters are Melton, Johnson, and Williams.

But man, is that a young CB room.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the opening day starters were Will Johnson (whom I assume you mean for "Campbell"), Max Melton, and Garrett Williams.

But I also wouldn't be shocked in Starling Thomas V edged Johnson or Melton out of starting reps. Will Johnson hasn't played a down of football since March 19.

Edited, thanks. I had Will Campbell on the mind for some reason.

I could see Johnson or Melton getting edged out, but I don't think it'll be Starling Thomas who does it if so. It's not impossible though.

I don't see Johnson not having played football since March being all that big of a deal. I think the talent will win out (assuming health).

They don't have to pay him. I don't know how that impacts the cap though.
It often doesn’t save cap money. Under some circumstances if the club had insurance, the insurance payments can be applied to salary. The payments are viewed as if the player were returning that much of their salary so it can reduce the cap some. These policies are not always purchased.

early guess is melton being the odd man out but he was improved substantially as the year went

Melton ain't going nowhere. With the leap Williams took from year 1 to year 2, I'm sure Melton will be given a similar opportunity.

I saw something once that the team even saves substantial money by putting people on IR.

Injury bug hitting early, again. At least this time its SMB and not our main pass rusher.

Anyone know what happened?

I would assume basketball but some of these knuckleheads invent ways to get injured.

Didn't some dude cut fingers or blow his toes off recently?

They said it was basketball related.

As @oaken1 says. Rookie CBs producing at a high level are rare.

Overall Melton's yearly grade was just below SMB.

The interesting thing about Melton was the range. He had the 2nd most elite level starter rating games per pff among rookies after DeJean but also 3-4 REALLY bad games.

The high level games shows that he belongs IMO. He was less polished coming out than most of the others. If he can stabilize his output he'll be a really good corner. Going from a raw rookie to a 2nd year player, I'm sure that he will take a step forward. Question is how big a step.

On SMB. Sucks to lose a decent #2 CB, but at least it's at a deep position. Melton, Jones, Thomas and Johnson are up. Until we know if the young players are ready, this is bad for the team. If the young players are ready, then it's good.
