I say this with all the respect in the world to starling - who I am also glad is on the team. There is only so high of a ceiling an undrafted 5’10” corner can reach and I think he has reached it. This team needs and deserves better- even if that comes with a little growing pain. Gotta roll with johnson and melton on the outsideStarling Tomas V is one of my favorite players on the team. Very underrated by even Cards fans IMO. He was a starter last year, see no reason why he won't be this year with SMB going down with injury.
Roll with whoever covers better. Starting CBs under 6ft are actually pretty common across the league. I just searched the 3 teams in our division and the Chiefs (and stopped). Both of KCs listed #1 are under 6ft and each of our division opponents have someone under 6ft listed as a starter.I say this with all the respect in the world to starling - who I am also glad is on the team. I was hoping we would trade him but this is 2nd best for the team because I don't think he starts (and I don't want him to start).
Read some things here that I don't think are accurate. For the offseason he will take up a roster spot as he goes on active/NFI. But once we hit the final 53 he moves to reserve/NFI.
He's not entitled to any compensation while on NFI, although the club can choose to pay what they like. Any money not paid becomes cap space. His prorated bonus is still due which is $1.955m, but assuming they don't pay him anything else that frees up $8m of cap space.
They could cut him now and just pay his remaining $4m signing bonus, but I imagine they will wait to see how the rookies work out. No real advantage to rushing it when they can do it at any time for the same total and split it over 2 years.
Maybe why they had Asante Samuel Jr in.
You may want to review the contract notes.
Jones is an interesting prospect. He’s a fine athlete with speed, jumping ability and good agility. Hopefully he used this downtime to increase his strength. He’s very aggressive on potential interceptions and fits into an offensive CB group. He loses contact coming out of his break but that should be an area he can improve. He’s really solid playing zone so he should see some playing time. His biggest deficiency is in run support, but it’s mostly tackling technique and strength; all correctable concerns. This is a potential starter if he can reach his ceiling.Don’t forget about Elijah Jones either. Cards have a very nice, deep young CB corps.
Also, DeJean is vastly overrated on here. He had some nice returns and good SB playing behind the best DL in the game. He wasn’t all that special all season. But he will probably get better in year 2 as well.
Ramsey would be a nice vet addition.
Ramsey, Johnson, Williams, Melton, Jones, Burke would be a nice top 6. Plus Clark and Starling too.
Contract NotesAbout his salary becoming guaranteed in March? That doesn't matter for NFI.
Contract Notes
- $14.195M guaranteed at signing (signing bonus + 2024 salary + $4.5M of 2025 salary)
- Additional $3.195M of 2025 salary fully guarantees the 3rd league day of 2025 (injury guaranteed at signing)
Well, the $4.5 million is certain, and I wonder how they interpret the $3.185 million (injury guaranteed at signing).
As I said, guarantees do not apply to NFI. They are void. The only money he's due is his prorated signing bonus. Everything else is gone unless the team decide to pay him anyway, which seems unlikely.
He’s already been paid the bonus. He’s not due anything; if he takes an injury settlement that will apply against the cap.As I said, guarantees do not apply to NFI. They are void. This is correct, but the garanteed money for this year were paid on 3rd day of the new league year - 15 MarchAs I said, guarantees do not apply to NFI. They are void. If I get it correctly, both Brit and K9 are technically correct. It's confusing. BRIT is suggesting that NFI make agreements within the personal services contract signed by SMB and the team are null and void. Unless there is language specific to this, I somehow doubt NFI trumps all of the renumeration clauses of the original contract. And, keep in mind, that the injury occurred before the third day of the new business year, according to what I can see.
I imagine we won't know the cost before they file their list of the final 53 and the associated expenses.
I'm pretty sure his salary was guaranteed on that date -- it wasn't a roster bonus (which is actually paid). This is correct, but the garanteed money for this year were paid on 3rd day of the new league year - 15 March

Those guarantees are usually for injury and/or performance. But an NFI doesn't trigger that guarantee.
BRIT is suggesting that the NFI make all guarantees, save, as you say, the signing bonus already paid, no longer applicable.
