ASFN family… I’m a lurker more than a poster but my brother and I have been on this site since the early 2000s. So most of you don’t know me but hopefully that will change along with my transition off of active duty (33 years) and back into the civilian sector.

A few weeks back I asked Darren in mailbag what it would take to get my retirement flag flown as State Farm… and the team (Lacey Probst) took it from there.

My flag was flown on 3 of my ships, at 3 of my commands and here at Navy HQ (in the Washington Navy Yard), along with a stop at State Farm.

I thought it was a large flag (9’ X 5’) but the Cardinals facilities team had to rig a set-up that was for a flag 3X larger to get my flag above the stadium. It flew solo for 2 days (to try and catch the wind) and they sent some awesome photos.

My 3-Star (and long-time mentor), VADM Jom Downey will present it to my kids at my retirement ceremony on the 22nd of May. And we already have a huge flag pole at the place we bought in Minnesota to hang it.

So despite our favorite past time of bashing the organization, their support and willingness to go above and beyond for our vets must be acknowledged.

Just wanted to share this with you all. And, hopefully soon, my 17 year old and I will start showing up at games and we might have the fortune of meeting some of you face-to-face.

Until then, take care. And go cards!!

Very cool.
I don't make it out to every game, so if you are looking for a pair of tix, I am always looking for a Cards fan to take them off my hands.

Awesome brother, and thank you for your service! It's good to know that the Cards braintrust can do somethings right every once in a while!

Thank you for your service. I, like others would love to see a picture of the flag.

Congrats Captain Matt! Yes, he is my real brother! We grew up in Central Illinois where you were either a Chicago Bears fan (vast majority) or a fan of the St. Louis Football Cardinals. We chose the Big Red because our dad was a Southern Illinois guy who was a fan of both the football and baseball Cardinals.
Where in Central Illinois?

I grew up in multiple towns, high school in Springfield.

Congrats man...That is cool as hell with the flag I hope we get to see it some day.
I was in the Navy...85 thru 88....and now my son is an FT1 with 9 years in. The kid just scored..he has been on shore duty working the brig in NC the past few years...and his next duty station is in San Diego...it counts as sea duty but it is a teaching position so he will be home every day anyway with the occasional exception of a 1 or 2 day training cruise....when he finishes up there...he gets to go back to shore duty.
Navy is a good life for some people. But damn does it sure pay a hell of a lot better now than it did when I was in. My check could not survive two nights at the Helm Club....I think we got like 375 every two weeks or something. My son gets ten times that
