For a 6th round I think it’s an outstanding move. The thing that really excites me is he obviously must fit our style of offense. Maybe Barksdale doesn’t.

Let's not try and compare Barksdale to Gilbert because there is no comparison. Gilbert is a waaaayyyy better RT than Barksdale and doesn't have the baggage Barksdale carries.

My biggest concern with this signing is his history of PED use and his Injury history.

The Cards need Gilbert to be on the field playing. If he can stay on the field then this could be a great trade.

From the Pittsburgh Post Gazette:

https://www.post-gazette.com/sports...ht-tackle-Marcus-Gilbert/stories/201903080086

Drafted in the second round in 2011, Gilbert started 13 games as a rookie and has been the Steelers’ starting right tackle ever since — except when injured or suspended, and that’s been a lot the past two seasons, when he’s missed 20 games, four to a PED suspension in 2017. He played just five games in 2012 and only five last season because of injuries.

He was a good one when he played, though, and rarely allowed sacks.

Only had 7 holding calls (at least accepted calls) in 88 games. That's pretty good and Pittsburgh doesn't have a problem throwing the ball around when they need to.

We just have to hope he stays healthy. I am sure Kugler and Saxon were asked about his attitude before they made the deal so I'd have to assume they both vouched for him.

Great move for the cost. Hard to argue this one. Keim is really prioritizing keeping comp picks.

Not bad when you add

CB Robert Alford
TE Charles Clay
OLB Brooks Reed
OT Marcus Gilbert

None of these guys are world beaters, but for just over 14 mil in 2019 and no negative comp picks, not bad.

The offseason is starting out pretty good...add a few more in free agency and have a quality draft and we are on our way to being competitive.

No the signings aren't world beaters but all of them are upgrades over what we had last season.

Another good article on Gilbert:

November showed Marcus Gilbert's importance to Steelers

https://247sports.com/nfl/pittsburg...us-Gilberts-importance-to-Steelers-125547765/

The Steelers have struggled to protect Roethlisberger since Marcus Gilbert went down, and it is defining this portion of their season.

Gilbert rarely gets the credit that he deserves. He is not one of the glitzy first-round picks. He is not the beloved Army veteran. He isn't even the undrafted free agent made good in Ramon Foster, who is one of the team's leaders in the locker room. Right tackles are viewed largely for their contributions in the running game, and Gilbert is excellent in that area. But the past month has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt what Gilbert means in pass-protection as well. It was even evident in how the Denver Broncos deployed their best pass-rusher on Sunday.

Better than Andre Smith that’s for sure. Little disappointed to see he only played in 5 games.. ugh. But this trade won’t go down if he’s not healthy and as long as he doesn’t get hurt in camp can he can be cut.

This sets up well for next week.

A linebacker and wide receiver would be a nice addition to this group.

Another offensive lineman wouldn’t hurt.

Yep. Add in Mosley and Brandon Marshall and then we can roll into the draft and get another corner, another WR, some OL and DL.

Please don't overpay for a free agent WR...the group is mediocre at best.

Draft is risky but deep at WR.

RFA - Geronimo Allison is a name to watch IMO. I don't know if he fits into the KK style of offense but he could probably be a bargain if tendered for original round comp (nothing, since he wasn't drafted). GB could match but would they?

Gilbert is potentially a big get. Next Mike Gandy. We went places last time we poached their starting tackle.

maybe im just jaded after the last few years, but:

Keim keeps betting that oft-injured players will suddenly play 14/15/16 games a season

Guys like this make you think a position is addressed -- maybe even coming out of training camp -- only to watch him go on the DL for the last 11 games of the season.

These holes are easier to address constructively now vs week 6 of the season

Great deal if he can stay healthy, he might be the best OL we now have, knock on wood.

My only concern is with Humphries, Pugh, and now Gilbert, what is the likelihood of having another street free agent constructed O-Line by week 8?
Seems like a certainty. Brace yourself for another year derailed by injuries to the offensive line.

At some point the Cardinals are going to have to reboot the whole line by finding five guy who can play all 16 games and then upgrade from there.
