Left handed players were once considered an anomally in the sport of tennis. In spite of that, legendary lefties emerged to be among the sports’ greats. Those iconic names include Jimmy Connors, Rod Laver, John McEnroe, Rafael Nadal, and Martina Navratilova.
The last time left handers swept Wimbledon was in 1984 when McEnroe and Navratilova won. However, there is a successful group of south paws in the 2026 Wimbledon draw who could possibly add their names to the left-handed Wimbledon lore.

Well known ATP lefties are Ben Shelton, Learner Tien, Jack Draper, Cam Norrie, and Juan Manuel Cerrundolo, the player best known for defeating Jannik Sinner at this year’s French Open.

Diana Shnaider, who defeated Aryna Sabalenka at the French Open, is among the top ladies’ lefties. Leylah Fernandez, the 2021 US Open finalist, is also a southpaw looking to make a big run at Wimbledon.
Newcomer, but soaring in popularity, is Alexandra Eala who recently played doubles with Venus Williams at the Bad Homburg Open.
Eala may need to get through Serena Williams to advance to the latter stages of Wimbledon. Serena is her projected second round opponent (should Serena beat Maya Joint and Eala beat Renata Zarazua in their first round matches.)
It is amazing that left handers are relatively rare to professional tennis, but we have had legends succeed as lefties. Who will be this generation’s left handed players that will rise to the occasion at Wimbledon this year?
