MCALESTER — Byng senior Preston Welch delivered the decisive blow with a three-RBI triple in the top of the eighth inning, lifting the Pirates to a 12-8 victory over host McAlester Tuesday night at Mike Deak Field.
Byng improved to 3-1, while Class 5A McAlester fell to 3-4.
The Pirates leave Sunday for the 2026 Gulf Coast Classic, headquartered in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Byng has pool play games Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
Byng 12, McAlester 8
With the game tied at 8-all, Lane Brown started the Byng uprising in the top of the eighth inning with a one-out single. Reese Littlefield followed with a base hit before Jaxon Andrews was hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Welch quickly cleared the bases with a drive to the center-field wall. He later scored on a passed ball to give the Pirates a four-run cushion.
Lane McCarter then closed the door on the mound, striking out two in the bottom of the eighth to pick up the win in relief. He struck out eight, walked six and did not allow an earned run over the final five innings.
McCarter also led Byng’s 11-hit attack, going 4-for-4 with a two-run triple in the first inning, a double and two runs scored.
Welch finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs, a walk, a double and three runs scored, while Lane Alexander went 2-for-3 with two walks, an RBI and a run scored.
Grant Mullins paced the Buffaloes, going 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and three RBIs. Blake Judkins also had two hits, doubled and drove in a run, while Jaxon McKinney went 1-for-3 with a double, two walks, an RBI and two runs scored.
Denver Durant was the losing pitcher for McAlester. He struck out four, walked two, and allowed four earned runs in 2.2 innings of relief.
