Bears release Daniels, Stewart
March 1, 2004, 5:30 PM CST
The Bears released defensive end Phillip Daniels and backup quarterback Kordell Stewart Monday.
"We decided to release Phillip and Kordell because it was in the best interest of all parties," said Bears general manager Jerry Angelo. "Both players gave maximum effort during their tenure with the Bears, but our recent philosophical changes on offense and defense do not fit their skill sets as well as the previous systems did.
"By releasing them before the start of free agency each will have the opportunity to pursue a better match on the open market. We wish them both the best."
The Bears tendered qualifying offers to offensive lineman Mike Gandy and defensive end Joe Tafoya, both restricted free agents.
The team also tendered offensive lineman Steve Edwards and wide receiver Ahmad Merritt, both exclusive free agents.
