Rookie hospitalized after drinking

FLAGSTAFF - First-round pick Bryant Johnson was treated and released at a hospital Sunday morning after apparently participating in too much Flagstaff night life the previous evening.

Johnson, who signed a five-year, $8 million contract Wednesday, was led into an ambulance in the early morning at the players' dormitory on the Northern Arizona campus.

Coach Dave McGinnis watched as the receiver was taken to the hospital.

Johnson was dehydrated and apparently had consumed too much alcohol. He became sick at the dorm and medical help was called.

Johnson denied he had too much to drink. "I was feeling weak and my stomach was bothering me a bit," he said.

Cardinals officials declined comment but confirmed some details of the incident.

The players had Sunday off from practice.

Johnson, from Penn State, was the 17th overall pick in April's draft and is expected to contend for a starting position.

Kripes!

An ambulance for "feeling weak and having a sick stomach"?

Oh well, I guess it's better than a bar-fight...

Portland Oregon these days.
Hey -- he just signed an $8 million contract, and is in his first ever professional football camp.

Overduing the celebrating on his first day off is not all that bad. Let's give the kid a break.

Besides -- I'll bet Sullivan has already torn him a new one.

This one takes the cake!

Ambulance? Ambulance?

What the heck was he drinking? It better have been after a few shots of Jager.

If it was one of those foo-foo drinks (Cosmopolitan's), then I'm going to be real disappointed!;)

I really have no problem with this. The guy is young and was proabably spurred on by the veteran on the team as well.

As many times as I have been to flag I always see the Cards out partying somewhere.

Just a minor glitch in the radar as far as im concerned!

Since Bryant and I are around the same age, I totally understand.

It happens to the best of us.

Rookie hazing is as old as training camp themselves, let's not blow this all out of proportion. As said before, at least it wasn't a bar fight or something on that level.

I'm sure Sully and Mac will be real easy on Bryant today.

Dehydration can be a real problem especially at that altitude.

Not being from this climate (dry), not drinking enough water and drinking to much alcohol can be dangerous.

Drink more water!

I agree. But, still a teeny weeny little red flag.

Probably, it was just a matter of a young guy wanting to fit in by showing his new teammates he could hold a lot of liquor. That coupled with the stress of practice, dehydration etc. probably did it.

I can remember - when I was his tender age of 21 or so - my head being in many a wastebasket while the room spun around and around and around.

Which brings me to my only area of concern. Having a queasy stomach (i.e. Johnson's explanation) would hardly have been reason for anyone to have called an ambulance. I'm guessing his symptoms must have been a bit more severe than they're letting on.

On the brighter side, I think it's a good thing that his teammates acted responsibly and didn't screw around with something that might have been more serious.

And it's probably far better that young Bryant Johnson dodged a bullet and received this early "wake up call." (How many young players - who think they're immortal - continue to overindulge until they face a far more serious situation later on in their careers?)

No doubt most of us are fun-loving guys and girls who enjoy a pop or two. But sometimes we forget how fragile life really is.

If hot weather and alcohol consumption lead to an ambulance ride they better bring the fleet to Sun Devil Stadium this Saturday. I have seen some of you boys go at it before.

I understand Johnson got Religion...

Late Saturday evening through early Sunday morning.

Something about bowing down before the little white budda and making multiple offerings...
