It’s a uniquely Wisconsin scene: a large group standing in a parking lot, making a communal toast as several costumed sausage mascots look on.
But to celebrate Bob Uecker, “Mr. Baseball”, there is no celebration more fitting.
Milwaukee Brewers fans gathered downtown to celebrate the completion of 80-foot-by-100-foot Bob Uecker mural, which now covers the north facade of the Wintrust Financial Center. The mural was painted by artist Mauricio Ramirez, who also painted the Giannis Antetokounmpo mural on Wisconsin Avenue.
The event, hosted by Milwaukee Downtown Bid #21, was billed as a “tailgate-themed” celebration. The first 500 guests over the age of 21 received a free can of Miller Lite.
Mayor Cavalier Johnson spoke at the event.
“Bob reminded us that baseball is about more than just about wins and losses, it's about family, it’s about community, it’s about tailgating, it’s about drinking a Miller Lite, eating a Usinger brat, and celebrating memories that last a lifetime,” Johnson said.
Brewers President of Business Operations Rick Schesinger, President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Matt Arnold, Manager Pat Murphy and team captain Christian Yelich attended and spoke on their personal experience with Uecker.
Yelich spoke about how Uecker was “at his best” when a player was having a rough time with his game.
“He always had players' backs,” Yelich said. “When guys were struggling, he’d always come around, tell you he had your back, crack a joke."
Murphy talked about the importance of keeping Uecker's legacy alive for future Brewers’ fans.
“It’s what it’s all about. It’s a legacy,” he said.
Other notable attendees included members of the Uecker family, Judy Uecker, Bob Uecker Jr., and Sue Uecker. The family prepared a statement which thanked Ramirez for his “thoughtfulness and attention to detail in creating this incredible piece of artwork. Ueck would be humbled and so proud of what you accomplished here.”
Ramirez spoke about the process of painting the mural, and how he loves the city of Milwaukee.
“For me to be a part of this makes my heart full of joy,” he said.
He added that he felt a special connection with Uecker through the completion of the mural.
“It’s an honor to have this relationship with Bob Uecker through this mural,” he said.
Uecker’s broadcast partner Lane Grindle closed out the remarks, after which Ramirez signed the mural and fans were treated to free brats. As fans clamored to take photos with Yelich and Murphy before they left, Bob Uecker loomed large over the gathering, a smile on his face.
“We always said that Bob was larger than life, and now he literally is,” Grindle said.
