The NFL will officially hold a supplemental draft this summer as quarterback Brendan Sorsby officially declared on Monday evening, per multiple reports.
The Sorsby-Texas Tech controversy has engulfed college sports after Sorsby won his injunction against the NCAA to play football in the fall for the Red Raiders despite his gambling investigation.
It's likely Sorsby will be suspended for some of the 2026 season for the gambling controversy, but it's a near lock he'll get drafted to an NFL team and given an opportunity sooner than later to start given his on-field talent.
Who could draft Sorsby? Well, a few teams stick out that could use a 2027 draft pick on a possible franchise quarterback... maybe not the ones you'd expect, given what it might cost to draft him. So, we'll leave teams like the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets off the list, especially if Sorsby costs a first-round pick.
The Steelers might be the most obvious team for Sorsby. With Aaron Rodgers returning for one last run, the team will most likely enter 2027 without a clear plan at the quarterback position. Drafting Sorsby could give the Steelers a clear heir apparent who can develop behind Rodgers in 2026 and contend for the starting job in 2027. Pittsburgh may convince itself it has the infrastructure and veteran coaching staff needed to keep Sorsby on the right track as he acclimated to the NFL. The Steelers will always struggle to be bad enough to get the draft pick needed to get a franchise quarterback in the NFL Draft; taking Sorsby this summer could possibly alleviate that major concern.
The Falcons are another team that might not be bad enough in 2026 to secure a high draft pick if the Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa experiments go awry. Those two's combined injury history alone makes you wonder if Atlanta could get antsy to secure a possible quarterback for the future now and not risk draft positioning in 2027. Taking Sorsby would be an aggressive move for the first-year regime in general manager Ian Cunningham and coach Kevin Stefanski. The Falcons aren't the most likely team. However, the team has been in the quarterback desert since Matt Ryan got traded to the Indianapolis Colts. Teams do desperate teams when they're thirsty for good quarterback play. We won't rule the Falcons out, even if Penix and Tagovailoa are on the roster. The need is just too pressing.
Would the Eagles actually pivot off Jalen Hurts one day? You cannot rule it out. Adding Hurts shocked the NFL in 2020 while Philadelphia had Carson Wentz on the roster. We won't rule out Howie Roseman making a big swing on Sorsby as the possible franchise quarterback to replace Hurts one day. The Eagles trading Hurts away one day and giving Sorsby his job after a year or two on the bench to develop wouldn't shock us one bit. This franchise is genuinely unpredictable, and it's just not every day a contending team gets a chance at a quarterback like Sorsby.
The Dolphins just signed Malik Willis to a big free agent contract, to be sure. However, Miami is the one team that might pick high in 2027 we could see making a swing on Sorsby. The issue is, what happens if Willis is just good enough to make the Dolphins somewhat competitive? That'd make getting a high 2027 pick a bit more challenging. Going ahead and adding Sorsby and having him sit behind Willis gives the Dolphins a clear-cut plan at quarterback going ahead. If Willis balls out and plays well, he immediately gives the Dolphins an excellent trade candidate once Sorsby is ready to take the field. Having two good QBs on the roster isn't a bad thing, especially for the Dolphins.
Would the Lions ever pivot off Jared Goff? That might seem silly on its face, but Detroit is another team that isn't likely to pick high in the NFL Draft any time soon. If the Lions feel that Sorsby gives them a higher long-term ceiling, we wouldn't be surprised if the team decided to add him as the long-term replacement for Goff. Perhaps Detroit is perfectly content with Goff for the long haul. However, like with Philly, this is a contender we're keeping an eye on as a surprise Sorsby landing spot. Goff could net Detroit a great draft pick in an eventual trade, like he did with L.A.
