Visiting Seymour held Greensburg to just two points in the first quarter and 10 in the first half. The Owls withstood a Pirates’ rally to post the 48-46 victory Tuesday.
Greensburg drops to 9-12 on the season. Seymour improves to 9-9. The Pirates host South Decatur (13-5) Thursday.
Seymour scored the first four points of the game as Gage Hillian got the Owls had a pair of buckets. As the game neared the mid-point of the first quarter, Jacoby Miller hit a long jumper just inside the 3-point line to cut the deficit to 4-2.
Seymour scored the next five points and held the Pirates scoreless to lead 9-2 after the first quarter.
Seymour’s Christopher Pumphrey hit a 3-pointer to open the second quarter and extend the Owls’ lead to 10 points. Ethan Smith answered for the Pirates with a right-wing 3-pointer. Seymour scored the next five points, capped by a Nate Fritsch steal and bucket to give the Owls a 17-5 lead with 3:44 to play in the half.
A Jacoby Miller tip-in stopped the run by Seymour. After the Owls pushed the lead to 19-7, Jacoby Miller completed a traditional three-point play to cut the deficit to 19-10 at the half.
Max Buening opened the scoring for the Pirates in the third quarter. Still trailing by nine points, Greensburg went on an 8-0 run. Two Jacoby Miller free throws started the spurt, and a Zayden Ramsey bucket ended it with the deficit down to 21-20.
Carter Stein got the Owls some breathing room with a 3-pointer, but free throws by Ethan Smith and Jacoby Miller knotted the game at 24-24.
A Hillian free throw ended the third quarter with the Owls leading 25-24.
Another Hillian free throw opened the fourth quarter. Logan Simpson found Jonah Hellmich for the 2-handed dunk to tie the game at 26-26.
Seymour scored the next five points and never trailed again. The Pirates got to within one at 32-31 on a Jacoby Miller traditional three-point play and at 34-33 on a Ramsey drive to the bucket.
Seymour stretched the lead back to seven points with less than one minute to play and held off the Pirates from there. With Greensburg trailing 48-43, Ramsey hit a 3/4-court shot at the buzzer to make the final score 48-46.
For the Pirates, Jacoby Miller tallied 23 points and five rebounds. Ramsey finished with eight points, one assist and one rebound. Smith added seven points, three rebounds and two assists. Buening had six points, two rebounds and two assists. Hellmich added two points, five rebounds and one assist. Simpson had one rebound and three assists. Zayden Miller grabbed three rebounds.
South Decatur
The Cougars opened a busy week by hosting Oldenburg Academy Tuesday. South Decatur led 18-14 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 38-22 at the half en route to a 79-41 victory against the Twisters.
South improves to 13-5 while the Twisters fall to 8-11. The Cougars travel to Greensburg Thursday and host Brown County Saturday.
Drake Scaggs and Karson Templeton led the Cougars in the first quarter with nine and six points respectively. Brayden Gerrian hit a 3-pointer for South as the Cougars led by four after one quarter.
Five Cougars scored in the second quarter that saw the Cougars outscore the Twisters 20-8. Gerrian scored seven points in the quarter. Scaggs chipped in with six points. Tayedin Traylor hit a 3-pointer. Cayden Drake and Aidan Bryant both had a bucket for South.
In the third, the Cougars erupted for 28 points to lead 66-32 heading to the fourth quarter. Templeton scored nine points in the quarter. Drake added eight points and Scaggs had six points. Gerrian hit his third 3-pointer of the game.
South scored 13 points in the fourth quarter in which the running clock came into play. Paul Schoettmer led South with seven points. Carter Tull hit a 3-pointer. Traylor added a bucket and Drake hit a free throw.
For the game, Scaggs led South in scoring with 21 points. Templeton was next with 15 points followed by Gerrian 13, Drake 11, Schoettmer nine, Traylor five, Tull three and Bryant two.
Oldenburg won the junior varsity game 31-21.
South was led in scoring by Tull with 11 points followed by Bair five, Leary two, Garrett Huckleberry two and Josh Winkler one.
Rushville
A big first half by host Delta helped the Eagles knock off Rushville 67-45 Tuesday. Rushville falls to 7-13 on the season. The Eagles improve to 12-8.
Delta took a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Clayton Chase’s 3-pointer got the Lions on the board. Gavin Owen added a bucket. Owen Zachery scored Rushville’s next four points and Emmett Knecht hit a pair of free throws.
In the second quarter, Delta outscored the Lions 15-6 to lead 34-17 at the half. A pair of Knecht 3-pointers was all that fell for the Lions in the quarter.
Rushville had its best offensive quarter of the game in the third. The Lions scored 18 points. Chase drained a trio of 3-pointers and added a free throw for 10 points. Knecht hit another two 3-pointers and Owen added a bucket. After three quarters, Delta led 51-35.
Delta outscored Rushville 16-10 in the fourth to close out the win. Knecht scored five of Rushville’s 10 points in the quarter.
For the Lions, Knecht finished with 19 points, three rebounds and one assist. Chase tallied 13 points, one rebound and one assist. Zachery had seven points, five rebounds and five assists. Owen added four points and one rebound. Adams had two points and two rebounds. Ryder Flannery added four rebounds and two assists. Liam Gurley had one rebound and one assist.
