Boys basketball: Cougars, Bulldogs fall in regional championship

A pair of Mid-Hoosier Conference teams took to the hardwood at Seymour High School Saturday in hopes of winning the regional championship. Class A No. 3 Hauser jumped out to a 23-8 first quarter lead against South Decatur and the Jets surged to the regional title 74-54.

South ends the season at 18-7. The Jets improve to 25-2 as they head to the semistate at Washington.

Hauser’s Bill Miller opened the scoring with a left-corner 3-pointer. Gavin Keller scored on the fastbreak to extend the early Hauser lead. A drive by South’s Drake Scaggs got the Cougars on the board. After a 3-pointer from Hauser’s Stryker Gill, South’s Scaggs hit a free throw and Aidan Bryant scored on the fastbreak to cut the deficit to 8-5.

Hauser then put together an 8-1 run with Joel Bechtel’s bucket giving the Jets a 16-6 lead. A bucket by Scaggs in the lane stopped the run, but the Jets closed the quarter on a 7-0 run, with Kameron Blair and Gill both hitting 3-pointers. After one quarter, the Jets led 23-8.

A pair of free throws by Blair opened the second quarter. South got on the board with a bucket by Cayden Drake in the lane. Karson Templeton’s 3-pointer from the top of the key cut the deficit to 28-13. The Jets scored the next seven points, all by Gill.

South’s Brayden Gerrian completed a traditional three-point play and Templeton followed with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 35-19. Hauser closed the second quarter on another 7-0 run to take a 42-19 lead to the half.

A drive by Gill opened the scoring in the third quarter. Templeton answered with a bucket in the lane. Scaggs followed with a pair of free throws and reverse layup to cut the deficit to 44-25. A Keller bucket led Hauser to a 6-2 run before another layup by South’s Scaggs. Five points from Keller extended the Hauser lead to 57-32 with 2:38 to play in the third quarter.

South got back-to-back buckets by Scaggs and Templeton, but the Jets answered with a 3-pointer from Braydon McFarland and two free throws by RJ Foster. A jumper by South’s Drake closed the quarter with Hauser holding a 62-38 lead.

After two free throws by Hauser’s Blair, South went on a 9-2 run. Scaggs scored to start the run and Drake scored the next seven points to cut the deficit to 66-47. After the teams traded two points each near the midway point of the fourth quarter, Hauser got layups from Blair and Keller (two) to extend the lead to 74-49.

South closed out the game with two free throws by Paul Schoettmer and three free throws from Carter Tull to make the final margin 74-54.

Scaggs led the Cougars in scoring with 19 points. Also in double figures were Templeton with 12 and Drake with 11. Bryant added four points followed by Tull three, Gerrian three and Schoettmer two.

Templeton and Scaggs both pulled down six rebounds. Drake added four rebounds. Grady Scudder grabbed three rebounds. Schoettmer also finished with three rebounds.

Bryant dished out a team-high three assists. Scaggs and Templeton both had two assists and Drake added one assist.

Hauser was led in scoring by Keller with 26 points. Gill finished with 19 points followed by Blair 13, Miller seven, McFarland three, Foster two, Joel Bechtel two and Waylon Harper two.

Hauser will face Bloomfield (19-8) in the second semifinal Saturday of the Washington Regional. Barr-Reeve (25-1) and Liberty Christian (19-7) open the semistate at 10 a.m.

Batesville

The Bulldogs traveled to Charlestown to take on No. 1 Silver Creek for the regional championship Saturday. Batesville led after the first quarter, but the Dragons rallied to knock off the Bulldogs 92-77.

Batesville led the Dragons 23-20 after the first eight minutes. Silver Creek outscored Batesville 23-16 in the second quarter to take a 43-39 lead to the half.

In a high-scoring third quarter, Silver Creek extended the lead to 72-64. The Dragons pulled a way to the victory with a 20-13 fourth quarter for the final of 92-77.

The Bulldogs were led in scoring by James Hughes with 28 points. Trenten Luers poured in 24 points and Kamryn Holcomb added 15 points for Batesville.
