A game-winning shot in front of a packed home crowd against a country rival is one for the memory book. Friday’s Mid-Hoosier Conference game between visiting South Decatur and North Decatur played out just that way.
After South tied the game 68-68 with two Drake Scaggs free throws with :17 to play, North worked the offense to find Logan O’Dell in the left corner for a 3-pointer that found nothing but the bottom of the net for what turned out to be the game winner with just :2.4 left.
A desperation 3/4-court shot by South was no good and the Chargers prevailed 71-68.
After the weekend games, both teams sit at 2-1 in the MHC.
South took a 12-8 lead after the first quarter. Owen Rennekamp scored all eight points for the Chargers. Scaggs and Cayden Drake both had two buckets for four points. Karson Templeton and Aidan Bryant added two points each for the Cougars.
In the second quarter, North outscored South 22-15 to lead 30-27 at the half. Rennekamp connected on three 3-pointers en route to 13 points. O’Dell added five points. Drake led South with a pair of 3-pointers and 10 points.
In the third quarter, both teams scored 21 points as North held on to the 3-point lead heading to the final eight minutes. O’Dell hit two more 3-pointers in the third quarter for eight points. Sam Crowell and Rennekamp also hit from beyond the arc. For South, Tayedin Traylor, Templeton and Bryant all hit from long range. Bryant had six points in the quarter. Templeton and Scaggs both added five points.
In the fourth, Templeton hit a pair of bombs for South for seven points. Drake also scored seven for the Cougars. North got eight points from Rennekamp and O’Dell, including the 3-point dagger that gave North the victory.
For the Chargers, Rennekamp led all scorers with 34 points. O’Dell finished with 18 points followed by Crowell eight, Charlie Parmer seven and Matthew Fields four.
For South, Drake led in scoring with 20 points followed by Scaggs 15, Templeton 14, Bryant 10, Gerrian three and Traylor three.
Saturday, North fell at Lawrenceburg 51-35.
Rushville
Rushville played host to New Castle Saturday in a game that came down to the final seconds. With the game knotted at 38-38, New Castle got a stop on defense late in the fourth quarter. The Trojans’ Mason Miller hit a step-back 3-pointer from the left wing to put New Castle on top 41-38 with :11 to play.
Rushville could not come up with the game-tying bucket and fell to the Trojans 41-38. Both teams are now 6-7 on the season.
New Castle led 9-7 after the first eight minutes. The Lions rallied to lead 21-20 at the half. After three quarters, New Castle led 34-32.
For the Lions, Zy Adams tallied 14 points, one rebound and two assists. Clayton Chase finished with nine points, three rebounds and one assists. Emmett Knecht had seven points and four rebounds. Owen Zachery had five points, six rebounds and three assists. Ryder Flannery added three points, one rebound and one assist.
Miller led New Castle with 11 points, including one 3-pointer – the game winner.
Greensburg
The Pirates played host to 9-2 South Dearborn Saturday as Greensburg looked to halt a 5-game skid. The Pirates trailed by two at the half, but turned that around in the third quarter to lead by two heading to the final eight minutes. Greensburg made enough plays and free throws down the stretch to hold off the Knights 57-55.
Greensburg improves to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in the EIAC. The Knights drop to 9-3 and 1-2 in the conference.
Greensburg jumped out to an 18-13 after the first quarter. The Knights bounced back to take a 25-23 lead at the break at the half.
The Pirates outscored the Knights 15-11 in the third quarter to take a 2-point lead to the final quarter.
Greensburg led 54-50 with less than a minute to play. South Dearborn completed a traditional three-point play with :44 left in the game to get within one. As South Dearborn was trying to foul to stop the clock, the Knights were call for an intentional foul. Jacoby Miller hit two free throws and the Pirates got the ball back. Miller’s final free throw was enough to hold off the Knights 57-55.
For the Pirates, Andrew Bowman led in scoring with 21 points and rebounding with eight. Jacoby Miller tallied 15 points and four rebounds. Ethan Smith finished with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists. Max Buening had four points, two rebounds and a team-high three assists. Logan Simpson added three points, two rebounds and one assist. Jonah Hellmich had one point and four rebounds. Hayden Ramsey and Zayden Miller both grabbed one rebound.
South vs. Southwestern
Saturday, the Cougars returned to action hosting MHC foe Southwestern (Shelby). South Decatur led 20-16 after the first quarter and 42-34 at the half. The Cougars outscored the Spartans 43-21 in the second half to pull away to the 85-55 victory.
South improves to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in the MHC. Southwestern drops to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
In the first quarter, Karson Templeton, Drake Scaggs and Cayden Drake all had six points.
Scaggs scored 13 points and Drake added six in the second quarter as South took an 8-point lead to the break.
In the third quarter, Drake connected on six buckets for 12 points to lead the Cougars. Paul Schoettmer led South in the final quarter with six points.
For the Cougars, Scaggs finished with 28 points. Drake added 26 points and Templeton had 17 points. Schoettmer finished with six points followed by Aidan Bryant four points, Tayedin Traylor two points and Brayden Gerrian two points.
South won the junior varsity contest 31-24.
The Cougars were led by Carter Tull with 15 points followed by Brody Bolton eight points, Rayland Henson four points and Josh Winkler four points.
Batesville
The Bulldogs improved to 11-1 on the season with a 73-58 victory against Southwestern (Hanover). The first quarter was the difference as Batesville outscored the Rebels 28-14.
For the Bulldogs, James Hughes tallied 22 points, 10 rebounds and two assists for his double-double. Kamryn Holcomb finished with 20 points, six rebounds and three assists. Trenten Luers had 16 points, three rebounds and a team-high eight assists. Brayden Maple finished with seven points, three rebounds and six assists. Ethan Schneider added four points and three rebounds. Braydin Hughes had four points and one rebound. Winston Garrett grabbed two rebounds.
