While it might not have been the first question out of fans of the Boston Celtics in the wake of the news that the team dealt away star forward Jaylen Brown, at least some were left wondering why it was the Georgia native that Boston elected to move on from given the season he had last year and the not-entirely certain recovery of Brown's costar on the wing from an Achilles tendon injury.
But it turns out, according to senior ESPN contributor Shams Charania on a recent episode of "Get Up," the "Celtics received calls on Jayson Tatum over the last couple of weeks" at the same time they were shopping Brown for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo, and then after the Greek Freak was dealt to the Miami Heat, for offers that eventually landed them Paul George and an underwhelming haul of draft assets.
"They shut those (calls about trades for Tatum) down completely, from my understanding," added the ESPN reporter.
"But when it came to Jaylen Brown, they were open to listening, and they have been for quite some time now," said Charania, who noted Boston had previously tried to deal the Cal alum for Kevin Durant before they'd tried the same with Giannis. "And so, it became about what they can get for him once the toothpaste was out of the proverbial tube."
"All indications after this trade are that, clearly, that offer was never coming," said Charania. "That was never going to happen."

"But why now? There are three years left on Jaylen Brown's contract. They go out seeking four or five first-round picks in deals. It was very clear that Jaylen Brown felt a level of disrespect being thrown out there in trade talks. And well, listen, the only way to make him feel better is by showing him the money in late July. Two years, $145 million is what he was eligible for on an extension with the Celtics."
"All indications after this trade are that, clearly, that offer was never coming," said Charania. "That was never going to happen."
