Coming into the summer, the Boston Celtics knew they would need to make some tough decisions regarding multiple players' contract situations. Five members of last season's roster had team options for the 2026-27 season, and it was unlikely that all five would have their options picked up.
On Monday, June 29, Adam Himmelsbach of The Boston Globe reported that the Celtics were picking up the team options for Neemias Queta, Jordan Walsh and Dalano Banton. Amari Williams and Max Shulga, who have both just completed their rookie seasons with the Celtics, have had their options declined. Banton's contract remains non-guaranteed.
"According to a league source, the Celtics are exercising the team options of Neemias Queta, Jordan Walsh and Dalano Banton. Banton remains on a non-guaranteed deal," Himmelsbach reported. "Per source, the Celtics are declining options of Amari Williams & Max Shulga, but they could still have opps w/Cs."
Both Williams and Shulga are eligible to return to the Celtics on two-way deals, allowing them to continue their development within Boston's system while also suiting up for the Maine Celtics. Both Queta and Walsh now enter the final year of their current deals and will hit unrestricted free agency next summer, unless extensions are agreed upon beforehand.
June 29 was the league-wide deadline for teams to make the final decision regarding players with team options on their deal. The Celtics can now move forward with a little more clarity over how many roster spots remain available as we head into the start of free agency.
