Jan. 17—BISMARCK — Macey Neumiller went off against Bismarck Legacy.
The Jamestown High School freshman drained four of eight attempted 3-pointers en route to her 21 points in the Blue Jay girl's basketball team's test against the Sabers Saturday afternoon.
It was almost enough.
Neumiller and the Jays fell 57-55 to the Sabers. The loss puts the Jays at 1-5 in the West Region and 3-6 overall. Jamestown will be back on the hardwood on Tuesday hosting Minot North at 7:30 p.m.
"Obviously it's a tough one, losing by two, but I'm really proud of how our girls competed," JHS head coach Andy Skunberg said. "I thought we defended at a high level, we took care of the basketball, and we played together."
While Neumiller was the dominant offensive force for the Jays, the team had seven other players who contributed at least one point to the team's total score. As a team, the Jays nabbed 19 total rebounds and went 11-for-15 at the foul line.
"In a game like that, you're talking about a couple possessions, and sometimes the shots you want just don't fall but our approach was right," Skunberg said. "We stayed connected and we gave ourselves a chance until the final horn. We'll learn from the details, but the effort that's what wins over time.
The Jamestown High School boy's basketball team is still looking for that first conference win.
Legacy bested the Blue Jay boys 76-49 on Saturday to put the Jays at 0-6 in the WDA and 2-7 overall. Jamestown is slated to be in action next on Tuesday at Minot North. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:45 p.m.
"We played solid defensively in the half-court," JHS head coach Tim Ranum said of the Jays' performance on Saturday. "Griffen Gegelman got his first varsity action and gave us some nice juice. Jamison Kleinjan also had great energy and intensity. We struggled all night with turnovers due to their intensity, and we just were unable to click at all offensively."
Kleinjan was the only Blue Jay to crack into double-digits against the Sabers. The junior rattled off 12 points while Gegelman contributed seven points to the scorebook. Abel Dolokelen finished with nine points.
