For the first time in a long time, the Chicago Bears have stability at the quarterback position. In fact, they have a budding superstar on their hands in third-year pro Caleb Williams, who electrified the NFL world during his sophomore season.
But, believe it or not, they still have an important decision to make at quarterback this offseason. Bears general manager Ryan Poles said that backup quarterback Tyson Bagent has generated trade interest this offseason.
"We have gotten a few calls there," Poles said Tuesday morning at the NFL Scouting Combine.
But Poles said "it's a really tough decision for us" given what he and head coach Ben Johnson think of Bagent, who was signed to a two-year, $10 million contract extension last summer.
While Williams looks the part of a franchise quarterback, it's also important to have a solid backup in place because you never know what can happen (even though Williams hasn't missed a game in his first two seasons). Chicago is weighing the options of keeping Bagent on the roster to solidify that backup job and allowing Bagent the opportunity to contend for a starting role elsewhere.
If the Bears part ways with Bagent, they'd need to have a plan in place for backup quarterback. While Case Keenum, slated to hit the free agent market, has been a valuable asset as a coach, Bagent provides more value on the field. Unless Chicago has a replacement in mind or the price is just too good to pass up, you'd have to anticipate that Bagent is back with the Bears in 2026.
