With the NFL Scouting Combine underway, trade rumors are picking up fast and furious with teams looking to fill out their roster before heading into the draft and free agency. While the Chicago Bears are set with Caleb Williams as their franchise quarterback moving forward, there has been reported interest in their backup quarterback, Tyson Bagent, a player that head coach Ben Johnson feels very highly of.

General manager Ryan Poles said the team has received a few calls inquiring about Bagent's availability. But Poles said "it's a really tough decision for us" given how he and Johnson feel about Bagent coupled with the dependability he brings as Williams' backup quarterback.

Johnson was asked about the Bagent rumors, saying he knows the team has to do what is best for their future in a possible deal. Johnson added that he is also a big fan of his backup quarterback, ranking him as one of the 32 best quarterbacks in the NFL.

"No," Johnson said, when asked about trading Bagent, hiding behind a cough with a smile. "I love Tyson, and that's one that kind of pulls at your heart strings a little bit because he's someone that you care about so deeply. He's a hell of a football player, at some point you want to see him have a chance to do it himself. We'll always do what's best for our team and organization, I do think there's a lot of merit to having a strong No. 2 quarterback, he certainly fits that bill. I'm of the mind that he's probably one of the best 32 (QBs) in the NFL, his preseason tape over the past few years have probably confirmed that, in my opinion. If I took myself out of the equation, I want what's best for him, if he would like an opportunity to start, I certainly hope he can get that."

Chicago signed Bagent to a two-year, $10 million contract extension last summer, a moment that went viral when the young backup quarterback got emotional discussing the impact of his new deal. Now, Bagent's opportunity may be even bigger in the NFL as conversations are likely to pick up at the NFL combine between interested teams and the Bears.
