There's been a lot of discussion about Chicago Bears backup quarterback Tyson Bagent this offseason, including potential trade interest from around the NFL.

Bagent, a former undrafted free agent, quickly climbed the depth chart as a rookie in 2023 and has held the backup job ever since. Bagent also quickly earned respect from head coach Ben Johnson, who believes he could be a starter elsewhere. So it's no wonder the Bears locked him down to a two-year, $10 million contract extension last summer. General manager Ryan Poles has said "it's a really tough decision for us" given what the team thinks of Bagent. But they haven't necessarily ruled out a trade.

ESPN's Dan Graziano shared a list of hypothetical trades, including the Bears dealing tight end Cole Kmet. And if you think the Kmet trade doesn't make sense, wait until you hear this one: Tyson Bagent for Anthony Richardson.

I don't see anyone giving up a pick for Richardson at the moment. The Bears dangled Bagent in trade offers earlier this offseason, and here he likely gives the Colts a better backup option than Leonard.

Richardson gets to learn from Bears coach Ben Johnson and maybe show enough in the preseason that he becomes appealing to another team in trade. Heck, maybe Johnson has some ideas for how to use him in a package or two. The Bears still have Case Keenum behind Caleb Williams as a veteran backup.

This trade proposal doesn't make sense for the Bears -- not because of the idea of a trade itself but because of the compensation. Bagent has the Ben Johnson stamp of approval, so it's highly unlikely that they'd swap him for Richardson, who's dealt with injuries and lost the starting job to Daniel Jones.

Chicago might entertain a trade for Bagent, for the right price, but simply swapping players and getting worse at backup quarterback wouldn't be a win for the Bears at all.
