The 2026 baseball season capped an especially memorable three-year stretch for Holy Ghost Prep.
Two years after winning the school’s first PIAA state championship by outlasting Indiana Area 6-5 in the title game, the Firebirds made it back to the final this spring.
After outscoring its District One and Class 4A state opponents 39-4, HGP, with a senior core of seven starters from the 2024 championship team, fell to Indiana 6-5 for the title at Penn State despite a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh inning.
“The real credit belongs to the players in our program and the assistant coaches around them,” said Holy Ghost head coach Greg Olenski, a 2010 graduate of the school. “Their commitment to each other, their work ethic and their willingness to put the team first have been the driving force behind everything we’ve accomplished.”

As for Olenski’s role, he believes it’s “to establish the vision, uphold the standards and create an environment where our players can reach their full potential.”
For guiding the Firebirds to an 11-2 record over the last three postseasons, including a district playoff defeat in ’25, and playing for the title twice, Olenski is the Courier Times/Intelligencer Coach of the Year. Counting a 2022 trip to the championship game, his teams made it there three times in five years.
“He’s great at helping players with fundamentals, like any good coach, but he takes lots of time with his players to make sure they are mentally strong,” said senior left fielder Tyler Bergkoetter. “He helps everyone relax and enjoy the game while still being focused and present in the moment.”
Senior center fielder Eddie Rosado, who broke Olenski’s school record for career hits (110) with his 111th in the state final, especially appreciates that the coaches trusted him to be a leader for the past three seasons.
“I’m super grateful to have Greg as my head coach because he and the coaching staff prepare us for every moment in practice so when we get to games it comes naturally,” Rosado said. “He always puts us in great positions to succeed.”

While Holy Ghost is moving to the Philadelphia Catholic League in all sports this fall, Olenski plans to keep doing what he and the Firebirds have been doing in recent years when playing an independent schedule.
And hope to be competing for another state title sooner rather than later.
