The Atlanta Hawks wrapped up their Salt Lake City Summer League schedule on a high note on Tuesday, earning a double-digit win over the Memphis Grizzlies to finish with a 2-1 record in Utah.
Both teams rested some key players, including No. 3 overall pick Cameron Boozer, No. 8 overall pick Kingston Flemings, No. 23 overall pick Zuby Ejiofor and some notable non-rookies. But using who was available, the Hawks earned a 96-82 victory.
Atlanta had six players finish with double figures. The top performer of the night was guard Devon Higgs, who originally went undrafted in 2023 and is trying to earn his place in the NBA world. Higgs is an awesome story, as he never played Division I basketball, instead spending his entire collegiate career at Division II Georgia Southwestern State University.
On Tuesday, he certainly took a step toward his dream, scoring 22 points on a very efficient 7-for-9 night from the field (including 2-for-3 shooting from deep). He also added five rebounds, two assists and two blocks. Higgs, who has spent time in the G League and overseas, will be a fun player to keep an eye on as Summer League continues.
Other top contributors for the Hawks on Tuesday were Isaiah Wong (15 points and four rebounds off the bench), Zeke Mayo (11 points off the bench), Henri Veesaar (11 points, five rebounds and four assists), Isaac McKneely (12 points and five assists) and Jacob Toppin (14 points and nine rebounds).
On the other side, the leading scorer for the Grizzlies was guard Brendan Hausen, who finished with 21 points behind a strong shooting night from 3-point range. Hausen is another intriguing story as a player who didn't start a single game for the Iowa Hawkeyes this past season, when he averaged just 10.2 minutes per contest.
All in all, the Hawks did well in Utah, winning two of their three games to get warmed up ahead of the main Summer League event in Las Vegas. When they resume play in a couple of days, fans can expect to see some familiar faces back in action after Atlanta opted to rest some guys on Tuesday.
If the Hawks can continue the winning habits they showed in Utah, they may be able to challenge for the Summer League crown in Vegas. A trophy would add a nice wrinkle to Atlanta's offseason as the team looks to turn a corner and ride its young talent to a bright future.
