The Atlanta Braves played a doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, and things did not go according to plan for the ball club. Atlanta has been one of the best teams all season while San Francisco has struggled, but you would not be able to tell that was the case by Wednesday's contests.

Game 1

It was a difficult approach for both teams after Tuesday's matchup was postponed due to weather. Grant Holmes got the start in the first game, but he allowed three earned runs across two innings of work.

Atlanta's bullpen ultimately surrendered four more runs in the defeat. The Giants' lineup was on top of its game on Wednesday to say the least. The same cannot be said for the Braves' lineup.

They scored only two runs on seven hits in the loss. No player had more than one hit in the contest. Drake Baldwin did hit a home run, but there was not much overall offensive production aside from Baldwin's long ball.

Game 2

JR Ritchie got the start in Game 2. The rookie allowed five earned runs across five innings on the mound. A number of relievers pitched in the first game, so it seemed as if the Braves' bullpen may be in trouble. However, veteran Carlos Carrasco turned in a clutch performance out of the bullpen.

Carrasco did allow two runs, but he also helped to save the rest of the bullpen by turning in four innings of relief.

The Braves' offense performed much better in the second game, but it still was not enough. They scored five runs on 12 hits. Austin Riley recorded three hits while Mauricio Dubon added a home run.

While they made things much more interesting in Game 2, the Braves still fell short in the end.

Braves Lose Best Record in MLB

The Braves have held the best record in the sport for most of the season. However, the Los Angeles Dodgers now hold the best mark in the game.

LA defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 5-4 on Wednesday. The ball club is now 48-27 overall. Meanwhile, the Braves fell to 46-27 this season.

Atlanta's lead in the National League East is now down to 6.5 games over the Philadelphia Phillies as well. It is still a fairly comfortable lead, but the Phillies are getting closer in the standings.

The Braves will attempt to get back on track on Thursday night at 7:15 PM EST.
