The Yankees got two key position players back on Friday in Trent Grisham and Ryan McMahon, but the injury-plagued club also placed another starting pitcher on the injured list.
The team announced before their 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins that left-handed starter Carlos Rodon was placed on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 30) with left elbow inflammation.
Rodon (4-2, 3.30 ERA) was slated to pitch Saturday against the Twins, but instead it looks like the team will use an opener, possibly Brendan Beck.
Rodon told reporters he was experiencing discomfort in between starts and when he went to throw in the outfield he did not feel 100%. An MRI revealed inflammation, not structural damage with his UCL, per Meredith Marakovits of the YES Network.
“It could be one of those things where it’s up to a week of no-throw, but it might not be that long,” Rodón, who plans on getting PRP and orthovisc injections, told reporters, per the Daily News. “It’s based on how I feel.
“I want to be back as soon as I can, whenever I’m ready.”
“Hopefully this is something that gets cleaned up and gets him in a better place so that he can return for the stretch drive and be even more of a factor for us,” Aaron Boone told reporters.
Rodón underwent left elbow surgery on October 15, 2025, to remove loose bodies and shave down a bone.
The left-hander also missed the beginning of the regular season while recovering from the surgery He did not make his first start of the 2026 season until May 10.
The Yankees are already down two starters in Max Fried and Clarke Schmidt, along with hitters Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
As for Beck, a second-round draft pick in 2021, he is expected to join the team off the taxi squad on Saturday and could be the opener depending on how much the bullpen is used Friday.

He is 7-2 with a 3.58 ERA in 88 innings in Triple-A this season.
Grisham made an immediate impact in his return, homering in the first inning Friday to tie the game at 1-1 before it went into a weather delay.
