Owatonna's Carmen Jirele won the individual championship (69-73—142) by one shot over Maple Grove's Amelia Morton. Austin's Ailani Thiravong placed 34th (80-83—163).
This week's outlook: Three of the top five finishers from a year ago are back, including junior Carmen Jirele from Owatonna, who looks to defend her state title after finishing as the Section 1-3A runner-up. Jirele did lead the Huskies to the section team title, so she'll have five teammates on the course with her. Maple Grove's Amelia Morton was the state runner-up by one shot last year (71-72—143), while Orono senior Ava Hanneman tied for third last year (76-69—145). ... This is Owatonna's third trip to state as a team. The Huskies finished third in their two previous appearances. ... Owatonna is the only Class 3A girls team to dethrone a defending section champion.
