Oriskany gets semifinal rematch

Oriskany's unbeaten Skyhawks are winners of 38 consecutive games over the last two seasons, including a 5-2 semifinal victory over Fillmore on the way to winning the 2025 Class D championship.

Fillmore (19-2) has repeated as Section V champion and opposes Oriskany (21-0) again Friday. The second Class D semifinal pits Section II Duanesburg (15-4) against Section XI Bridgehampton (6-10).

The Skyhawks defeated Fillmore 5-2 in last year's semifinal then beat Section II North Warren 9-2 in the championship game the following day. Oriskany was also a 2024 Class D finalist after it defeated Section II Hadley-Luzerne 9-3 in that semifinal.

Eddie Wright, a fifth-year varsity Skyhawk, is the team's leading hitter with a .567 batting average, four home runs, 30 runs batted in and 39 runs scored. He has also struck out 90 batters and posted a 1.34 ERA in 47 innings, and Oriskany has won 89 games and four consecutive sectional titles during his varsity career.

Juniors Dean Koenig (81 strikeouts, 0.84 ERA in 43 innings) and Trey Smith (41 strikeouts, 1.50 ERA in 30 innings) are Oriskany's other primary pitchers. Wright pitched a complete game against Fillmore last spring, and Koenig pitched the final inning in relief of his older brother Chase in the championship game.

Dean Koenig is a .476 hitter with 28 runs scored and 23 batted in, and senior Dawson Foss is batting .351 with 32 runs scored while classmate Jack Mason has driven home 23 runs.

Fillmore has won six consecutive games and 18 of its last 19.

Notre Dame streaks into semifinals

Utica's Notre Dame Jugglers have gotten hot at the right time, winning seven consecutive games to reach the state semifinals for the first time since winning the 2005 Class C championship.

The Jugglers (13-12) defeated Vernon-Verona-Sherrill 16-7 to complete a 7-12 regular season and have not been beaten since May 18. Notre Dame started the season with four losses at ESPN's Wide World of Sports complex and had a 3-9 record at the end of April.
