Leinart was busting no matter what. Another year would benefit Simpson.
But that's not the Leinart lesson.

Matt was the consensus #1 overall pick. But he wanted another year in college with his friends.
He had a semi rough year and got drafted 10th.
The decision to stay in college cost him several million dollars.

The point...
If a guy is getting top 5 grades for THIS draft...he needs to come out. A lot can happen in a year and the odds favor his situation getting worse rather than better

1. Leinart had 26 starts when he decided to pass on the 05’ draft (double what Simpson will have)
3. The difference in cash paid between the #1 pick in 05’ and #10 pick in 06’ was minimal.
3. No NIL back then

Alex Smith’s contract got him $49.5 million

Leinarts rookie deal was worth $32.8 million; he only saw $17.5 million of that.

Weird definition of “minimal.”

Leinart’s rookie deal was worth over $50m. I remember b/c he was the last first rd pick to sign. He sees it all if he were a better QB.

With another loss today they will break the top ten in the draft. Good web site tankathon you can track their progress. Not sure their is a QB worth taking this year unlike year when they were on track for Drake Maye until a pointless late season win. As for the picking a QB in later rounds means having the skill to find a diamond in the rough which is a skill Bidwill's organization does not possess. They have failed at first round automatic picks like Murray, Rosen, Leinart and going all the way back to first round pick Steve Pisarkiewicz the QB who could not see.

He might have gone number 1 in the draft if he’d have come out but stayed for one more year. He dropped and cost himself millions.

Alex Smith #1 signed for $53.5 mil, $24 guaranteed. He collected it all.
Matt Leinart pick #10 did sign for $51 mil, but only $14 mil guaranteed. He was cut and lost $15 mil. So it cost Leinart at least the $10 mil that was guaranteed.

Alex Smith was better than Leinart. Idk how long Matt would’ve lasted in SF to collect that entire deal especially under the Mike Nolan or Singletary regimes.
