I'm in the fair return for rental Geno camp

Remember what was given to for him from Seattle

They are getting more on the way out than what they have up to get him in, plus a couple seasons of good production

Extending him likely wasn't the correct move for how they are positioned - this seems like a pretty solid move

I think all of the moves should come together to create something interesting - just probably not for next year

The Athletic puts us in the loser column at the trade deadline. Acted like a full rebuild instead of a partial one.

Welp… that was a comically, brief era of somewhat relevance.

I believe it is obvious nobody was interested in GAAAAllen. I could qualify it be dating at the price the Dbacks were asking but, even then, negotiating is part of this and it is clear what the league thinks of him

They will get a comp pick if he signs elsewhere, which has more value than a low offer.

Plus, I always got the impression that they would trade one but would take a huge offer to get rid of both. Kelly had more value.

There was an SI article a while back explaining it. I did a quick look but couldn’t find it. The medical staff supplies Torey with a schedule on how many games they think a certain player needs off during a set time. There is a little wiggle room but not much. If there ends up being a new manager he will get the same schedule. Get use to it as long as Hazen is the GM.

Edit: Found the article:
Obviously with ALL the injuries we had this year, maybe their plan needs to objectively be looked at?

I forget which person on 98.7 said this, but they think if we have ANY interest in keeping Gallen, this is the only way he will be affordable for the next contract. So maybe silver lining if we can resign him and get him back to previous form?

I'd be shocked if the Dbacks got into a long-term deal with Gallen... Most probable is they extend the Qualifying Offer to him, which I believe will be in the area of $23m-$25m for a year. And I would be equally shocked if Gallen accepts it. Meaning he's likely to find a team willing to give him 3 to 5 years at roughly the same amount per year as the QO. And we get the comp pick, which would likely be somewhere in the first or second round I believe.

Here is where the new Dbacks slide in on the prospect ranking charts for the Dbacks top 30

Locklear #5
Drake #6
Bratt #9
Hagaman #13
Izzi #14
Garcia #19
Cranston #22
Burgos #24
Looks like good values. On the radio, they were talking about Locklear and Lawler manning the corners of the infield and how much money that would save, that could be used to acquire starting pitching.

Merrill Kelly said he would be open to coming back to AZ. Seems like most of the traded guys had favorable things to say about AZ.

Or how good the return was!!!

Glass Half Full Guy!
Probably a mix of both...when he first took on the role as GM, Hazen's #1 priority was to re-stock the farm system. And he did a great job at that. But in order to compete, eventually you will be forced to ship some of that talent off to other teams. Which he did and I would say he did a better than good job in that area as well.
It will be fascinating to see what he does with all of this new top 25 talent, combined with a team that still possesses some All-Star talent in Carroll, Marte, Burnes, Gallen (maybe?), Nelson (I think?) E-Rod (Not likely I know...), Moreno (perhaps?)...

We certainly won't be considered a legit post-season threat next year... However, I would not at all be surprised to see Hazen make the moves that would put this team in serious playoff contention again in 2027.

Hazen screwing up 3 straight drafts has a price
Hard to argue in favor of his drafting the past few years. He might've turned that ship around tis season - thought we won't know about that for a few years to come... Anyway, I trust Hazen and believe his record, when compared to other GM's, stacks up very well. Top 5? Top 10? I think so...

Was listening to Gambo a short while ago and I think he summed it all up quite well.

- Hazen's moves were given a B grade by all of the so-called experts.
- However, it's important to note that Hazen's job became much more challenging, surprisingly, when both the Twins and Giants became sellers.
- Hazen was mainly dealing with assets that has expiring contracts, where teams simply won't give away their top talent for a rental player.
- Yet, there is a good chance that at minimum, 2 of the 8 pitchers Hazen got back will turn into top quality MLB producers, and if that happens, Hazen's moves will skyrocket in terms of grading.

As for Gallen, according to Gambo there were two teams that tried to steal Zac at the last minute. Hazen didn't bite, which was the right move. The options for Gallen boil down to this: The QO offer will be in the area of $22m or so. The Dbacks ONLY get a comp pick if Gallen signs with another team with a total contract value worth more than $50m. So, if Zac were to only see offers for 2 years and $40m, and if he decided to take that offer (which I don't believe he would), the Dbacks would not get a comp pick.
Will Gallen get offers from other teams with contract values in excess of $50m? I think his performance over his remaining 10 starts or so will play a huge factor. Hell, if he somehow returns to CY Young consideration Zac, the Dbacks might toss a 3 or 4 year deal at him!

All in all...it's hard to argue Hazen could've done much better here.

Yeah and I’ll be shocked if two or three from this years draft aren’t added. Drake, Bratt and Cranston are my favorite out of these guys but we will see.
