What a year to need a QB

This crop is not looking hopeful
two sides to that coin:

side one: SOMEBODY will want Kyler, if only for a year.

the other: the Cards will be looking at a repeat of 2023 where they start the year with a backup QB at starter.

It should make KM more valuable to teams wanting to get a vet

But the crop of QB's after Mendoza fall off the cliff

Simpson helped himself with 2 good long passes in the playoff game. He had some misses too. He’s not targeted as an immediate starter, but on potential. If he’s there when the Cards pick, they should take him. Spending a lot to move up to get him is dicey.
Evaluators are stuck a bit back in time. Simpson is what college football gives you now in terms of development. None or very few of these QBs year to year are going to be viewed as immediate guys. See Drake Maye. It’s going to matter more what you put around them and how you can develop them.

That’s a separate convo IMO. If you believe this, you either shouldn’t keep them or shouldn’t draft a QB. Neither of those have anything to do with Simpson as a draft prospect.
It is a separate conversation but if we are going to be drafting our quarterback of the future we need someone to develop them. I don't see anybody on the staff to do that. So I'm hoping they bring in another coach with an offensive mind

I’m not certain 3 years from now that Mendoza is the best QB who comes out this year. Right now Mendoza ia the best by a decent margin.

For sure. Nobody knows what's going to be happening 3 years from now. One of the other quarterbacks could actually end up being better if the team that drafts them develops them properly

IMO he could be there when we pick. I agree that It is important to not have to move up in the draft and give away the future. I like him and stated in another post that he could sit behind Brissett next year and not be rushed in to start. Build the OL in free agency and other draft picks.

I wouldn’t hate Simpson. I’m guessing he’s there when the Cards pick.
He might have a later 1st round grade. Take an OT, or best defensive player in top 10 and trade back into round 1 and get Simpson later.

Or just tank next season too and draft Julian Sayin in 2027 ):

Sayin played two teams with a soul in Texas & Indiana

Looked bad in both of them.

Meh.

There are Bama fans who think the 3rd string QB is the best QB on the roster and are kinda hoping Simpson leaves. The top two guys had the advantage of being in the system for a year (2+ for the backup).

I like Simpson. Seems like mid to late 1st rounder to me though.

Mendoza is on another level.

I'd settle on Simpson in the 2nd. He's too huge a gamble for a top-10 pick.

I still haven't seen what I would need to see in Sayin to be a top 10 pick. I only watched him a little, and although he played well, he had wide open targets. Hard to say if he's good or not based on that.

I think the Cards are forced to gamble though not Ossenfort’s style.

It's always been the problem evaluating Ohio St QBs. Other than like two, maybe three games a year, they are so much more talented at WR than other teams are in their secondary it's tough to get a good read on their NFL skills

Gannon: “ I didn’t bench Kyler. I didn’t want to risk a major setback. The season got away from us so it just made sense to place him on IR.”
Kyler: “I felt I was healthy enough to play. It’s frustrating but I understand the coaches decision.”

Bidwill speaking: “I love Gannon. With the extraordinary amount of injuries it made it virtually impossible to compete. I have complete confidence in Monti and this staff. We have a plan to getting us back to being a very competitive football team.”

Bidwill THINKING: “Ef that. I’m not paying Kyler to leave, another coaching staff. The television money will be rolling in any day now.”

Us: Oh my God!!

I disagree with this. Either a guy is in the top 10 because he has such a roster advantage that he looks great or he has a mid roster, look above average, and guys want him to be better.

On Mendoza...if you look at his two serious matchups vs Oregon and Ohio St.

Combined
35 for 54 (64.8%)
437 yards
2 TDs and 2 INTs

It's good, but nothing spectacular. What is impressive is that Indiana is not considered a powerhouse school.

also what is not considered is that these are the rushing totals in each game
101 vs Oregon
121 vs Ohio St

With Simpson, in his 4 games vs Georgia and Oklahoma here are the rushing totals for Alabama

76
87
21
54

Those are just bad. And his per game numbers are a bit better than Mendoza's. None of this is to say he is a better prospect than Mendoza, just to point out that he is in a similar situation and has produced pretty close stats in big games with less of a running game.
