New York and Chicago style both suck. Give me a firm crusted pizza slice all around, including on the bottom, with thick, rich, fluffy crust body and copious toppings. I want to be able to pick it up by the crust without worrying about it drooping to the floor. I also don't want to eat my pizza with cutlery.
fold it dumb dumb

I think that's how James Franklin likes his pizza. :).

Deep dish is amazing and NY pizza is so overrated it's ridiculous. Detroit pan pizza doesn't get the love or credit it deserves.

So here's a summary of The Athletic's article (by Jeff Howe) from yesterday about 2026 head coaching candidates - sorted into categories, then listed alphabetically.

Category: Current/Former NFL head coaches
  • Brian Flores (MIN DC)
  • Kliff Kingsbury (WAS OC)
    • Developed Murray AND Daniels into rookies of the year
    • 28-37-1 as Cardinals HC; faded in 2nd halves - but the Cards continued doing so without him, while the Commanders improved down the stretch last year
  • Mike McCarthy (unemployed)
    • 125-77-2 with the Packers and 49-35 with the Cowboys
    • Has flaws in game management, but longevity in high-pressure jobs proves he's qualified
    • Can establish a culture, manage egos and develop quarterbacks
  • Matt Nagy (KC "OC")
    • 34-31 with the Bears, but things got worse as his tenure progressed; 6-11 in his last season
    • In hindsight, probably deserves credit for keeping them above .500
    • KC's O is much improved this season; learning from Reid?
  • Arthur Smith (PIT OC)
    • 7-10 all three seasons with the Falcons
    • The Steelers’ O badly regressed late last season amid quarterback turmoil
    • But it's showing signs of improvement with Rodgers at QB
  • Steve Spagnuolo (KC DC)
Potential first-time HCs:
  • Joe Brady (BUF OC)
    • Improved running game; groomed Allen into MVP
    • Was LSU's passing game coordinator for Joe Burrow
    • Seems to have learned from awful stint as CAR OC 2020-21
  • Anthony Campanile (JAC DC)
    • Turned around a bad unit in one year; probably a year away from serious buzz
    • Was LB coach & run game coordinator with GB last year
    • Worked under Harbaugh at Michigan, Flores with the Dolphins and Jeff Hafley
  • Klint Kubiak (SEA OC)
    • Son of Gary; runs the Shanahan offense
    • Saints O started out red hot last year before QB & roster issues took their toll
    • Doing even better making Darnold excel in a new system this season
  • Jeff Hafley (GB DC)
    • Was HC of Boston College before taking Packers job
    • Greatly improved Packers D
  • Jesse Minter (LAC DC)
    • Learning from Jim Harbaugh since 2022 (Michigan)
    • Also worked for John Harbaugh with the Ravens 2017-20
    • Improved Chargers to #1 scoring D last season
  • Zac Robinson (ATL OC)
    • Worked for McVeigh, O'Connell, and Cohen before taking Falcons job

What about Greg Roman??

He is certainly an interesting option, Daves. I think he was the assistant head coach with the Ravens in some of Lamar Jackson’s best seasons. I also remember him as a very good OC for Andrew Luck at Stanford.
He was OC for the 49ers under Jim Harbaugh, 2011-2014, adapting the offense from one that worked with Alex Smith to one that was better, then just as good with Colin Kaepernick, and riding a top defense to three NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl appearance.

Then he was OC for the Bills under Rex Ryan, 2015-2016. That team and offense were middle of the pack... but their QB was Tyrod Tailor.

Then he was Senior Offensive Assistant / Tight Ends Coach, Assistant HC and TE Coach, and finally OC for the Ravens under John Harbaugh with Lamar Jackson, 2019-2022.

Now he's OC of the Chargers.

So he's crafted offenses for and helped developed a diverse set of QBs, from Smith to Kaepernick to Jackson to Justin Herbert. He's learned from both Harbaughs, who build winning cultures. He knows how to get the most out of the running game and built an offense that featured tight ends in Baltimore.

He should have plenty of contacts from his time with the Harbaughs to build a quality staff.

One thing that makes me wonder a bit is that when Jim Harbaugh got ill during a game last season, it was Jesse Minter, and not Roman, that briefly took over as interim head coach. It might not mean anything at all. It just makes me think.
It is curious - though Minter is well qualified in his own right.

Not sure why he hasn't had more HC interest. He interviewed for the Browns job in 2020.

Next we will find out you are really into Pumpkin Spice Season.
My favorite meme was a picture of a pumpkin spice condom with a subtitle of a WASP woman's dream :D

Also, while I do like pumpkin spice in some things (like pie), the season is annoying. I usually presage it with this:
