we all know Mike B wants to please the League office / fellow owners

enough 2nd rounders have signed with varying levels guarantees that he is free to follow the lead without setting a precedent the league would frown upon

There’s no excuse not to get a deal done.

Tricky to take this position when we don’t know Johnson’s “ask.” If he has dreams of starting he’d better compromise.

I think that's exactly what Johnson and his agent are doing. They think he's a 1st rounder. He better start practicing and playing football soon or he really will have a setback. Then the teams would have known why they passed. Best thing he can do is take his 80% and get to work. This guy skipped a lot of workouts, didn't run. He acts like he has all the leverage. So does the agent. Prove you can play.

The contracts are slotted. This isn’t tricky unless the team is dysfunctional.
They slotted by gentlemen’s agreement, not by NFLPA contract. I’d guess the speculation is true. They want first round money or perks. Johnson is not the first player to drop.

I'm pretty sure they are slotted by the CBA.

There is ZERO info showing they want first round money/perks.

My lord… the way so many just line up behind the historically inept franchise that, despite spending some money this offseason, is STILL 25 million under the cap, never ceases to amaze me.

Seems totally likely the agent advised him to wait until the guys around him sign so the outline of the contract is done before they ever start negotiations.
Seems to be the M.O. for 2nd round picks every year.
Not really an issue for me..the overall dollars are already set anyway...rather dude gets 50k or 100k guaranteed in year 4 is more an issue to the agent or a player that can't make the roster... I don't think Monti will nickel and dime them since the parameters are now set. Dude will be signed before TC starts

Johnson has an steep hill to climb for playing time so starting his training camp ascent later than sooner will be to his detriment.

As there is zero information that the team is causing this.

The ability to criticize other posters for their take while pulling conclusions out of your own ass never cease to amaze me.

Who is saying that the team is causing this? That certainly wasn't in the post you quoted.

All of this will be immediately forgotten as soon as Will Johnson signs his contract.

I think if the contract doesn't get done, it is because Will and his agent are trying to play the "he should have been a 1st rounder" card. Or, he should have went higher so the Cardinals should fully guarantee his deal like higher picks.
Call his bluff and let him take his bad knee back to Michigan.

and the pile on continues. now the guy who everyone was elated we picked and penciled in as immediate starter is now apparently bluffing (despite zero evidence showing this) and his bad knee is now a problem that was otherwise glossed over before.

My point basically was that with slotted contracts, if a contract isn't getting done, it is most often because of the player and his agent trying to get something new/different than the slot has received previously.

I don't think this is really supported by evidence. We'll never know.

Seriously Cheese, when was the last time the FO did inept things with signing draft picks. I understand your overall frustration with this franchise but can't remember the last time signing a draft pick was an issue.

It’s not just about the pick though. It’s the team’s cheap MO that doesn’t allow me to give them the benefit of the doubt. The reality is the team is historically cheap… and that’s not ancient history. We’ve repeatedly and recently been dragged as one of the worst franchises as far as facilities, players perks, how their families are treated, ranking close to dead last in the league, not to mention sitting on oodles of cap room for three straight seasons. So right now, in a new era with more guaranteed money given to second rounders, and with us amongst the last team to sign ours, this current and perpetually cheap organization doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt from me.

No 47: TE Terrance Ferguson, on a four-year $9,713,466 contract, including $8,046,753 guaranteed

No. 47: Will Johnson Remains unsigned

No. 48: OT Aireontae Ersery: 4-year, $9.2 million deal (unknown guaranteed)

I’m still saying $9.5M with $7.5 guaranteed get’s r done!
