Heard an interview with Suns GM Jones that took place on Saturday. Not sure who did the interview but part of it was on this morning's Doug and Wolf show (they are on vacation and had subs).
When asked about Oubre's contract, Jones said that they are woking with his agent on it. There was no optimism in his voice that it was going to get done soon. It was pretty blah. Bottom line is I'm not sure what the heck is going on??

That makes it sound like they are at an impasse. Not encouraging at all. We have to hope maybe Jones is just playing it close to the vest.

Man, if a guy is looking at a multi-year 8 figure salary and takes the QO I think they are being given epically poor advice. I would hope the Nerlens Noel debacle would serve as a cautionary tale for these guys. Play out a three year string at the highest contract you can get and if your talent was legit you grab a giant contract at 26-27 years old.

That seems to be the Rich Paul special and at least Noel is still in the league Shabazz Muhammad is off in China. He'd be entering the final year of the extension this upcoming season that would have paid him as much annually for the past 3 years as his total career earnings thus far.

It's really baffling to see role players sign on with Klutch and then try to play hard ball with teams expecting to have the same leverage as top 5 players. Oubre's agent is Bill Duffy who has always had a good relationship with the Suns so I expect something to get worked out either here or with a S&T, doubt he'd advise Oubre to sign the QO.

The agreement could still be announced it just matters on how they time the signings, but there is no reason to announce it either really other than to appease some sports message board nerds. The current FO seems to keep things pretty tight lipped.

The last sentence sounds like the Suns really want to get a deal done. I'm hoping it can get worked out.

I am 100% speculating of course. But I'm not so much suggesting the agent is advising him to take the QO as the agent may be trying to make it enough of a possibility to squeeze more out of the Suns. This is just me....... based on my impression of today's "player empowerment" generation.

If I was KO, and the Suns came at me with a 4 year 60 to 80 million dollar deal........ I would absolutely think I was being lowballed. And I would absolutely think twice about working for an organization already deemed as "inept". With the playing time I KNOW I will get, and probably being the #2 or #3 option on a team full of role players...... I would bet on myself having my best year ever....... And go into free agency on an steady upward trajectory.

With those thoughts in mind...... I could easily see him taking the year...... Building his stock (we all know he is going to get a ton of playing time)........ And then going to get the 4 years 110 million I believe he will EASILY get next offseason with that weak ass class of FA's.

These are the exact decisions stupid franchises make. And we are a model of what stupidity and old world thinking looks like.

Give him 4/90 or 100 million and call it a day already. Bidding against ourselves or not.

Either, they have it all worked out and are keeping quiet, or they have different numbers in mind. Say the Suns are offering $13M/year, but Oubre wants $17M, then bridge the gap by meeting halfway. Taking a QO sounds like a bad idea for both sides.

Cam Johnson was a horrible pick and is nowhere near the player KO is now, or was two years ago.

IMO Cam Johnson is Casey Jacobsen with a bit more panache.

Or, he might turn out to be something much more valuable. Either way, my point is that if Oubre opts for the Qualifying Offer, Cam will have a year to get comfy at this level. My hunch is that the team believes Cam is more than a Casey Jacobsen type, and if he demonstrates some hints of being something more valuable in the limited playing time he'll see this year, I believe they will watch Oubre walk after this season and run with Cam.

If Oubre takes the QO...... My guess is that Bridges will be next up. Cam IMO is a lifetime backup and specialist without the ability to consistently create his own shot.

That being said I doubt he is delusional enough to believe he has earned near max money at this point in his career.

If I had to guess I would imagine he is trying to get something in the $17-20m range and the Suns are probably somewhere in the $12-14m range.

My guess is that they will end up meeting somewhere in between and it will be done with, maybe around $15-16m.

This is still a business and the Suns should not be agreeing to potentially crippling overpays just for the sake of their players' feelings.

This is coming from a guy that believes Oubre has all star potential too, but his potential is not enough to justify the type of money you are suggesting.

KO is going to get Brogdon & Randle money at a minimum IMO. And it will be higher if we let him pad his stats on a bottom 7 team next year. Which is almost a foregone conclusion at this point. Hence me saying give him atleast 20mil now.

The issue with the QO and why very few guys actually go that route is the risk that they get a major injury or under perform for whatever reason (don't mesh with the system, are in the coaches dog house, playing with nagging injuries, etc.). The Suns are in a dominant position right now and if they really want to keep Oubre they can feel free to throw him a bone and meet him part of the way or maybe make the 4th year a player option or something to give Oubre and early out if he wants it, but they certainly shouldn't throw 20+ at him just because he could potentially get that much next off season.

On the QO the team has no incentive to develop the player or give them playing time at all. Sitting on the bench is not a way to increase value. Its a giant game of chicken right now.

And btw. When you look at Oubre's numbers objectively, he is not worth any where near $20 million. Brodgon and Randle are both much more valuable by the numbers.
