By 1986, two things were clear in the ACC: Len Bias was an astonishing talent bound for great things, and Duke was a program on the rise.
The Blue Devils would go on to their first Final Four and national championship game under Mike Krzyzewski. It would not be their last.
Bias, of course, would die on Draft Night after overdosing on cocaine.
Maryland came to Cameron on January 25, and the world still seemed normal.
Johnny Dawkins and Tommy Amaker, who grew up in the same DMV orbit as Bias, were Duke’s starting backcourt.
Jay Bilas and Mark Alarie were Duke’s big guys, and we’re pretty sure David Henderson started that night, although we can’t find proof.
However, none of them were able to slow down Bias. Coach K understood how great Bias had become and in fact conceded a great night to him, telling his team to focus on defending the other guys.
Bias ended up with a career-high 41, but Duke won, 80-68, validating Krzyzewski’s strategy.
As mentioned above, Duke would make the Final Four, losing to Louisville, 72-69, on March 31.
Just 145 days after that brilliant display in Cameron, Bias would be dead.
