Duke and Michigan have a longer history than a lot of people realize. The Blue Devils and Wolverines clashed in twice in the 1963-64 season, with Michigan winning at home, 83-67 on December 21. Michigan’s defense was called “the Bloody Nose Alley,” and the late Jay Buckley was seen as Duke’s weak link (this resulted in his teammates calling him “Link”).
The teams met again in the Final Four, where Duke won, 91-80, behind 25 points and 14 rebounds from Buckley.
They played for several years after that, stopping the series in 1970. It resumed in 1989, then peaked in 1992, as the Blue Devils beat the Fab Five three times, once at Michigan, in overtime, once in the Final Four, 71-51, and once in Cameron the following fall.
So it’s nothing new, obviously.
This past season, the teams met in Washington. Michigan seemed like a juggernaut, but the Blue Devils pulled off a 70-63 win.
With Dusty May off to coach the Dallas Mavericks, and Michigan’s future uncertain, we thought it would be a good time to look back at this latest installment of one of college basketball’s better rivalries.
