The New York Yankees failed to acquire a right-handed hitting catcher at the trade deadline.
Neither Austin Wells nor Ali Sanchez is a strong option behind the plate for a Yankees club with World Series aspirations.
Now, the AL East team has pivoted to a veteran who recently hit the free agent market after a three-year stint with the Seattle Mariners.
According to Ted Schwerzler of minnesotasportsfan.com, the Yankees have signed Mitch Garver to a minor league contract.
"Source: Catcher Mitch Garver has signed a minor league deal with the New York Yankees," Schwerzler wrote on X. He adds that the Yankees have assigned Garver to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and the contract includes an opt-out later this month.

Garver, 35, won a Silver Slugger Award in 2019 with the Minnesota Twins, hitting 31 home runs with a .995 OPS in just 93 games.
That was the best offensive production of his career. Earlier this week, the Mariners released Garver after he managed a poor .175/.302/.294 slash line in 149 plate appearances.
At this stage of his career, Garver is not a strong defensive option behind the plate. But the Yankees need more offense, and he could be an upgrade over Sanchez with the bat.

The Yankees were connected to several catchers at the deadline. But the Twins decided to buy rather than sell, holding onto Ryan Jeffers.
The asking price for All-Star Hunter Goodman was reportedly very high, and the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays made trades for Adley Rutschman and Liam Hicks, respectively.
Garver could be an option at some point, but this is clearly Plan B for the Yankees.
