Heavy trade deadline selling sends Tigers tumbling down power rankings originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
While the Detroit Tigers were able to hold onto their ace, Tarik Skubal, during the offseason, they finally pulled the trigger on parting ways with their frontline arm. They traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers for a package containing OF Zyhir Hope, RHP River Ryan, and RHP Brady Smith.
However, that was not the only trade they decided to make before the deadline expired. They also got rid of another solid arm at the top of their rotation.
In a last-minute deal with the San Diego Padres, the Tigers decided to send over Casey Mize and minor league infielder Gage Workman in exchange for LHP Kash Mayfield and LHP Jackson Wolf.

Some were not too sure what to make of the Tigers before the Skubal trade. They were making up ground in a pretty wide-open AL Central, but these trades certainly make that much harder as two frontline starters are now gone.
They were previously ranked No. 15 in the power rankings, but after the deadline, Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter knocks them down quite a few spots to No. 24.
"It looked for a while like the Tigers were simply going to stop at trading Tarik Skubal over the weekend, but the Padres swooped in at the last minute to acquire Casey Mize in exchange for a package built around former first-round pick Kash Mayfield. Coupled with Zyhir Hope, who headlined the Skubal return, the farm system got a nice boost."
The Tigers and the Kansas City Royals were the only two teams in the division that did not get immediate help, while the others did. The Tigers are focused more on the future, and the rest of the season will be about development and evaluation at all levels.
