Dec. 21—ROCHESTER — Three Willmar wrestlers finished in the top five of their respective brackets in the MatBoss Minnesota Christmas Tournament at the Rochester Civic Center.
The Cardinals finished in 10th place in the 48-team tournament with 159 points. St. Michael-Albertville was the team champion with 376, beating Stillwater's 271.5.
Caiden Kassel and Cavin Carlson both finished in fourth place for Willmar. Kassel went 4-2 in the 127-pound bracket. Carlson finished 4-2 at 160.
Lawson Anez put together a 6-2 record for a fifth-place finish at 215.
Landen Kassel was 3-3, placing 11th at 114. Levi Swenson went 3-4, finishing 12th at 285.
The Cardinals head to the Rumble on the Red on Jan. 2-3 at the Fargodome in Fargo, North Dakota.
Holdingford was the team champion at the 35-team Redwood River Riot with 163.5 points at Redwood Valley High School in Redwood Falls.
The Huskers beat Marshall's 143.5 and New Ulm's 136.
The Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United led area teams with a seventh-place score of 109.5. Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City was 24th with 46. BOLD and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg tied for 26th with 38.5. Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield was 30th with 31.
United's Eli Olson won the 114 bracket after beating Redwood Valley's Nolan Ourada by a 15-0 tech fall in 2 minutes, 26 seconds.
Kameron Sather made the 152 finals for United, losing to Martin County's Torrey Paplow by a 6-5 decision. Ben Gunlogson was third at 145.
Paynesville placed third at the Jackhammer Invitational with 147.5 points at Pequot Lakes.
Staples-Motley won the 25-team tournament with 260 points. Perham was second with 154.
Minnewaska finished 11th with 87.5. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa tied for 20th with 47.5.
The Bulldogs' Tyson Meagher was second at 107. He lost the championship match to Staples-Motley's Garrett Bjerga by 6-3 decision. Mason Hansen added a third-place finish at 152.
BBE's Noah Jensen was the 114 champion. With a 5-0 record, Jensen beat Mille Lacs' Vincent Schmid in overtime with a 10-7 decision.
Minnewaska's Miles Wildman was the runner-up at 133. He lost to Staples-Motley's Cayden Neisen by 4-2 decision in the finals.
Benson finished in sixth place at the 18-team Monticello Invitational.
The Braves finished with 97.5 points. Andover was the team champion with 212.5, followed by West Central Area/Ashby/Brandon-Evansville's 174.5.
Benson's Max Nygaard claimed the 145 bracket with a 4-0 record. In the finals, Nygaard beat WCA/A/BE's Evan Dingwall by 8-4 decision.
Carson Olson placed second for the Braves at 121. He lost to Minneapolis Camden's Julian Kelley by 10-6 decision.
Quad County went 4-1 at the Top the Tree Duals. That included a win over host Luverne.
Quad County is a co-op of MACCRAY, Renville County West and Yellow Medicine East.
Against the Cardinals, Hudson Cole (114) and Blaine Carroll (152) each won by fall for the Cobras.
Mario Gradillas got a pin at 127 to propel Quad County to a victory against Springfield at Luverne.
The Cobras won six matches by forfeit.
Tied at 30-all, Jacob Savig and Breck Martin won by fall at 215 and 285, respectively, to give Quad County the dual victory against Red Rock Central at Luverne.
Emmitt Aus added another fall for the Cobras at 139.
Mario Gradillas (127), Blaine Carroll (152) and Easton Jaenisch (189) each scored pins and the Cobras won seven matches by forfeit against Chester, South Dakota at Luverne.
Border West won eight straight matches from 127 through 189 to beat Quad County at Luverne.
Hudson Cole (107), Mario Gradillas (121) and Jacob Savig (215) won by fall for the Cobras.

The Charging Dragons had 52 points. BOLD was 11th with 51, Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo tied for 20th with seven, and Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg was 23rd with zero.
D-C/Litchfield's Bobbie Jo Berg was second with a 4-1 record in the 112 bracket. Berg lost by fall in 1:01 to Tri-City United's Trista Gessler in the finals. Laneyah added a third-place finish at 106.
BOLD's Ava Kiecker went 3-1 and placed second at 130. She was pinned by Redwood Valley's Raegin Larsen at 3:44 in the finals. The Warriors' Loretta Fischer placed third at 142.
