Track and field roundup: Willmar comes away with an 8AA team title

May 31—COLD SPRING — Samuel Huisinga's record day helped the Willmar boys track and field team win the Section 8AA championship by the slimmest of margins.

The Cardinal boys claimed the 8AA championship on Saturday with 102 points, beating Detroit Lakes by a point. Perham was third with 92. The Willmar girls were fourth with 88.8. Fergus Falls was the girls' champ with 102.5, followed by Perham's 100 and Rocori's 89.

Huisinga highlighted the seven Willmar boys going to state after setting a section record in the discus. On his final throw of the day, the Cardinals' sophomore unleashed a throw of 172 feet, 1 inch to win.

Owen Sportel claimed the section title in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.62 seconds.

The Willmar boys are sending two relay teams to state. The 4x100 relay team with Isaac Cayler, Alex Groen, Briar Schuett and Bentley Nash took first place in 44.02. The 4x400 is also state bound after Sportel, Nash, Schuett and James Groen placed second at 3:30.86.

For the girls, Willmar senior Mallory Beier is going to state in three events. She won the long jump on Wednesday with a leap of 17-11.5. Then on Saturday, she placed second in the 400 at 59.12. She was also the anchor on the first-place 4x100 relay. Lily Bastin, Kamryn Zwagerman, Mallory Swenson and Beier finished in 49.35.

They'll go to state with discus throwers Maddison Molacek, Cami Oehlers and Isabelle Engel, who all qualified for state Wednesday. Allison Mages also qualified for state in the 3,200 after placing second Wednesday.

The Class AA state meet takes place at St. Michael-Albertville High School in St. Michael. Prelims are at 9 a.m. Friday. Finals are at 9 a.m. Saturday.
