HIGHLIGHTS
- A long-simmering rivalry between two of the most dangerous men on SmackDown was made official for WrestleMania 42 with a stipulation that removes all rules and WWE liability.
- A new United States Champion was crowned on SmackDown after answering an open challenge, and a WrestleMania defense appears to be next.
- The Rhodes-Orton feud escalated with a physical brawl that ended with an innocent bystander taking an RKO.
The top half of WrestleMania 42 has been set for weeks, but the lower and mid-card for the Showcase of Immortals wasn't etched in stone--at least before the most recent episode of SmackDown.
On an eventful episode from the Blue brand, WWE added some needed depth to the Las Vegas cards with at least one championship match made official. Let's get into it.
McIntyre Vs. Fatu: Unsanctioned Match
The biggest addition to the WrestleMania 42 card came when Nick Aldis officially booked Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu in an Unsanctioned Match. After weeks of brawling that culminated in both men crashing off a steel structure last Friday, Aldis acknowledged neither man was medically cleared but suspected both would be ready for WrestleMania.
Under Unsanctioned rules, WWE assumes no responsibility for what happens. This has the potential to be one of the most violent matches on the card.
Updated WrestleMania 42 Card
- Cody Rhodes (c) vs. Randy Orton -- Undisputed WWE Championship
- CM Punk (c) vs. Roman Reigns -- World Heavyweight Championship
- Jade Cargill (c) vs. Rhea Ripley -- WWE Women's Championship
- Stephanie Vaquer (c) vs. Liv Morgan -- Women's World Championship
- Brock Lesnar vs. Oba Femi
- AJ Lee (c) vs. Becky Lynch -- Women's Intercontinental Championship
- Drew McIntyre vs. Jacob Fatu -- Unsanctioned Match
- Likely, but not Confirmed: Sami Zayn (c) vs. Trick Williams (U.S. Title)
- Likely, but not Confirmed: Usos vs. Logan Paul and Austin Theory (Tag Titles)
- Likely, but not Confirmed: Nia Jax and Lash Legend (c) vs. The Bella Twins (Women's Tag Titles)
Zayn Wins the United States Championship
Sami Zayn answered Carmelo Hayes' U.S. Title Open Challenge and won via Helluva Kick after fighting off interference from Trick Williams. Earlier in the night, Aldis told Williams he had a match at WrestleMania 42. Zayn then attacked Williams and promised Aldis he would earn his own spot.
With Zayn now champion and Williams holding a WrestleMania match, a U.S. Title defense at WM42 is now locked in.
Rhodes-Orton Brawl Closes the Show
Cody Rhodes returned to SmackDown and immediately went after Randy Orton. The two brawled in and out of the ring, through the timekeeper's area and past security multiple times. The segment ended with Orton RKO'ing Jelly Roll before retreating up the ramp.
The Undisputed WWE Championship match continues to build heat heading into Las Vegas.
Women's Tag and Championship Picture Deepens
The Bella Twins defeated Charlotte Flair and Alexa Bliss after Lash Legend interfered. A post-match brawl involving all four teams plus Bayley and Lyra Valkyria suggests the Women's Tag Title picture is far from settled.
Separately, Jade Cargill hit Jaded on Rhea Ripley after a DQ finish in Ripley’s match with B-Fab, adding more intensity to their WrestleMania collision.
WrestleMania 42 takes place April 18-19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Both nights start at 6 PM ET on ESPN Unlimited.
